Clutch for 350-400WHP?

After talking with a local tuner who has done several BRZ's, he estimates my power for daily driving at around 350 wheel HP and 400+ for track use. He recommended the stage 2 clutch with flywheel from Exedy and noted that not much else held up to the torque of these engines.

Does anyone else have experience with a good clutch for BRZ's in this power range?

I've also been looking at the TRD lightweight flywheel and racing clutch for the BRZ. Has anyone run this before?

My main concern is that I don't want to be changing clutch disks and getting things resurfaced every 10k miles. I'd like to make it to at least 30k.

A lot of people on the forum use the exedy. I have always used them in my builds.

How long do you see them lasting typically? I wouldn't be surprised if Exedy made the TRD clutch as it looks the same and they do make a lot of OEM clutches.

What kind of life are you guys seeing out of your clutches? Also what kind of power are you making? Once my car is done I think it would be fun to join your group Sportsguy!

I've owned Exedy Twin Disk, Exedy Stage 2, FX350, FX400 and ACT 6 puck with HD pressure plate.

Exedy TD: obviously holds whatever you throw at it. Pedal effort is really REALLY high compared to all others. Even after break in, religiously per Exedy guidelines, there was still 20% of the time coming from a stop, where the clutch would INSTANTLY full grab, and you either chirped tires or stalled. No way around it and it was completely random. Not fun to drive at all anywhere.

FX350/400: Fairly easy to drive, pedal effort not too bad. I changed it because after a while, when the car warmed up it started to get hard to engage gears. Other people reported similar behavior.

Exedy Stage 2: This clutch was a dream come true to drive. I got it after Ptuning had been using it on their 400+ WHP car with success, even though its rated for around 215 WTQ. The problem with it was that a few people (including me), started experiencing locking out of gear issues. Coming from a stop, it was sometimes nearly impossible to get the car into first gear. Seemed like the cultch disk was not moving up and down the shaft. Exedy was great with me, and replaced it under warranty with a different version of the Stage 2 clutch (3 puck version). The person I sold it to, has had no problems with this new version.

ACT 6 puck with HD pressure plate: This clutch is fairly easy to drive, pedal effort is less than the FX400, holds pretty good power too. I avoided getting an ACT because I had friend's with bad experiences with them. I ended up getting it because I had no other choice and it ended up being a great buy. I can do a lot of 500 whp 383 wtq and the clutch holds good (it's rated for 345 Flywheel torque). It can get spongy if I do a few pulls at 550 whp 471 wtq, but that's completely understandable and far beyond its rating.

The ACT with Xtreme pressure plate requires a considerable amount of more pedal effort than the ACT with HD pressure plate. I would not get the xtreme pressure plate (bumps the rating to 450 flywheel torque).

Happy boosting!

im a clutch master fan boy through my experience (mr2 turbo 312 whp)

act -great but not on the durable side imo
exedy (single disc)- same as act
cm- has it all: factory feel on the foot, racing clutch grab and can take any amount of punishment

I'm considering South Bend clutches as well, but their price went up significantly in the past several months.

I bet you got mistakenly sold the HD PP instead of the Extreme

That is what happened to me. I bought the Extreme, but what I actually received was the HD. After loosing my mind, getting mad and demanding a refund, I tried the Extreme PP pedal and it's really noticeably and considerably harder than the HD. Decided to stay with the HD.

The HD is holding fine 383 WTQ and some pulls at 471 WTQ, so won't be looking to get an upgraded clutch anytime soon.

Hve you tried someone with the HD one? I only tried it in Alex Bizcayne car and it was right after installing the HD and the difference between both (trying one right after the other) was huge.
