Well I guess you could replace it with NOS... but then it's not MY car, it's YOUR car and I don't want it.

Exactly what I want. I'll be looking at headers/exhaust/tune soon after purchasing one. Then I'll wait and see how the hardcore N/A builds go to see where I go next.

Of course more straight line power would be nice, but as it is, it's got more than enough power to get you into trouble. Personally, I'm cool with the power as is. Even though I have "power adder" mods (intake filter, headers, race exhaust) I wasn't necessarily looking to go faster, I wanted a nice sound. Any power gained is a bonus.

What this car really needs is an owner who can appreciate it for what it is and not complain about its short comings after buying. Sure, it's "underpowered" but you can get a mustang, Camaro, challenger, charger, genesis, 370z, etc for a similar price. While someone will get butt hurt by me mentioning these other cars, it's the fucking truth. They may not be as light, or well balanced, but they're sure as fuck faster. Hell, at this point in looking to pay my car off by next August and have it traded in for something else that will be straight line faster and slightly more practical. The Eco boost mustang is winning that one, especially after a coworker took me out in his GT (I know they have different hearts, but same chassis, so whatever). Another one on my list is the Cayman, provided I can get into one for what I'd like to pay.

Did you even read what I said?Lets deconstruct my sentence so you can understand it...

Instead of saying "If they used X engine, we would have more power and could fit a better suspension, and it'd still be under 30k" you just complained about metal pinging as it contracts..
If you had started your thread off with a sentence such as "If they used X engine, we would have more power and could fit a better suspension, and it'd still be under 30k", it would have a much more significant chance of leading to the discourse you claim to have been trying to provoke, namely, a "redheads vs blondes" type of thread comparing and contrasting different possible engine choices for the 86 platform. You didn't go down that route...

Edit: And just in case you were referring to the 2nd half of my sentence (but then screwed up editing cause it's so hard):

I will say this from the perspective of a person who is still young to the car world, and one month of ownership of this platform: I venture to say there comes a point in time where it's more of drivers that hold the car back, not the other way around.

Two examples that I will list briefly from my experiences.

- I was with a local enthusiast club in the mountains a couple weeks back. Straight line, the Twins got spanked so bad. It took me staying in 4th gear and around 5-6k+ RPMS in order to keep view of a Corvette's rear end. Any curves, I was near riding it.

-I was with another local 86 buddy running with WRX/STIs, and a couple of other cars on a backroad "cruise". While we were hitting the corners like second nature, those other cars could not keep up. They kept telling us to slow down. I'm guessing those drivers did not want to push their cars like we did. Probably more confidence on our part? We know what the car can and cannot do? I don't know.

If I wanted to post awesome drag or lap times, cool, another "real" engine. For my intents and purposes, I love it in it's current form.

I suspect 80% of the owners are happy with it like it is.

The rest would still bitch.

Said it before, say it again. The FR-S/BRZ/86 is like a 250cc motorcycle. Those who have only "mad skillz" with a throttle will always and forever be sucking hind tit. A stock FR-S will ALWAYS be left for dead in any contest involving power and torque. Plan ahead for that, and the pissed-off face in the mirror of the three times more expensive car in front of you in the turns is worth every penny.

I'd say almost all drivers of the 86 platform would be fully satisfied if they could morph their cars into a Porsche Cayman.
Gotta pay to play.

You're alright kid

I'm young too, my first real car, got it straight out of college at 22 (yes, I am very fortunate and it is now paid off with money from my paycheck) and I always knew I wanted this car because of the experiences you had. I grew up racing in low spec classes because I didn't have the money to afford the expensive engines, winning those races were all about picture perfect smooth driving to maximize 100% of your grip and not ever fall out of the powerband or loose any unnecessary speed. On a good day I could school guys that spent more on their car then we spent on my setup, my brothers setup and our trailer combined, it was a rarity but all the more sweet.

The old addage: "If you can't go fast with 90 horsepower, 900 ain't gonna help ya"
