Here we talk about two types of installation

and I think are the two facilities that you speak ...

we must make the two options?
@pepe As depicted on the Radium link you shared there is the "Crankcase" type and the "PCV Valve" type. In other posts I have read, the "Crankcase" catch cans were capturing very little oil...if any at all. Therefore, not needed as much as the "PCV Valve" catch can. My ADD W1 "PCV Valve" can is capturing what I consider; a significant amount of oil. (Almost 1/4" of oil in roughly 4000 miles of driving.) So, you do not necessarily need to do two catch cans unless you have money to spare to do so!

Since I started this old thread I am going to resurrect it.

Took my car out for some post- pedal dance hooning in a parking lot today. I know it's bad but my 7 year old son asked for me to take him out and do it.

Anyway, just recently installed a Revworks UEL and a 2.5" OP, and flashed the latest OFT stage 2 for 93 octane.

When we got home I popped the hood to inspect the cam plate, which I had recently removed and resealed. No dripping so I guess it worked. Only other recent work is adding a Perrin low mass crank pulley. Anyway to my amazement I discovered there is about an inch of oil showing on the catch can gauge! This is the first time it has shown any accumulation in 2 years and I have mostly had the car stored until recently.

So, I am guessing that with the increased power and bouncing off the rev limiter a bit that I do now have a significant amount of blow by gases which didn't exist previously. Perhaps the home made baffle I had inserted has helped the can perform its function as well. I didn't drain the can yet and will monitor it over the next few weeks.

Only question now is whether I need to have the front crankcase vent on a catch can as well. My guess is not until FI but we'll see how the can fill progresses.

I also have the Cusco catch can (but didn't add anything to the inside of the can). Primary engine mod being a kraftwerks C30-94 supercharger. For the longest time I didn't notice anything in my cusco catch can either, until the day after I went hooning in an empty parking lot. I didn't even hoon for long (maybe just 10 minutes). I did turn off my traction control and did some donuts and figure-eights in the parking lot. The next day I noticed the Cusco can caught about 1" of blow-by oil/gases. I think the sideways action does a lot to induce blow-by gases. In normal street driving I didn't notice any accumulation of oil.

You are probably right. I am finally happy I bought the can.

So glad I stumbled upon this thread! Just pulled the trigger on a cusco as I do literally nothing but DD and a few canyon drives (still suck at driving) but feel like this is just a good precaution to have.

Did you all just use plain ol steel wool in these things? How much?

I think the stuff I used is stainless steel wool. Don't have the packaging any more but its been in my garage for years and hasn't got any rust. I put in enough that I am guessing filled up most of the can loosely so the oily gasses pass thru it.

The number one reason to install a catch can inline with the PCV on any boxer motor is the port injectors. Burning oil causes excess carbon buildup and fowls the port injectors regardless of how hard you drive your car. Savage Geese has youtube video on what it takes to service these things if you want to take a look at it ... for those that don't, you pretty much have to take the top half of the engine apart ... it took them a whole day to do it in a professional shop.

The rocker cover configuration is next to useless in N/A form and 100% necessary on forced induction cars.

I do not have any experience with the Cusco can, but I can attest to the effectiveness of the Billet Oil Catch Can #BC-175 ... I got mine from phasetek 2 years ago. It is baffled, and the instructions that come with it are for a mid 90's Camero. I installed mine behind the passenger headlight with longer hoses than were supplied. The baffles work very well on their own, but with an added piece of steel wool I catch about 20-30 ml of oil every thousand miles or so.

I empty the can as often as I can remember to to prevent sloshing oil in the can from blowing back into the return line.

Old thread back from the dead again...

My catch can has never caught much volume of oil. When I thought on occasion that I had accumulated an inch of oil in the can it was in fact just a bubble of oil filling an inch of the gauge on the can.

My intake manifold is spotless inside, indicating little or no blow by from the crankcase vent.

I recently put the supercharger back in my car, after only getting maybe 1000 kms from it before it died last year. I have put a few hundred kms on it this year on mild days. I will monitor both the can as well as the throttle body to determine how much blow by there actually is with my max 8.5 lb set up.

Based on the input of a mechanic on this thread, these cars, when properly broken in should typically allow very little blow by past the piston rings. I am sure with higher boost applications the blow by will be greater.

I baffled mine when I first installed it. I catch tons of oil in that thing.
