I have nothing against autos. I recognize all the advancements they've made, and argued in their favor on multiple occasions. It's just not for me though. More than anything, I don't want manuals to disappear completely. Auto's are just boring to me (I've driven plenty of modern and old auto's, owned a couple as well). I'm all for personal preferences; drive what you enjoy.

IMO that's a video game experience, not real driving. It's also dangerous if you're relying on the computer(s) to maintain control and you get into a situation the computer doesn't know how to handle.

The worst habit on a track is relying on traction and stability control to keep you in control.

EVERYONE looking at learning to drive on a track should also learn basic car control in a parking lot or skidpad with all the nannies fully off so they know how the car reacts without computer intervention.

When and if I go to the track, I can have both hands on the wheels always, while someone with a manual will be fumbling around with a shifter.
Anyone that is keeping their mind ahead of the car won't be fumbling with a shifter, they'll be planning ahead and shifting when planned. People that get into a corner and fumble with a downshift or upshift are people that got into situational overload and couldn't process things fast enough.

Plus, most tracks can be driven using only 1 or 2 gears. You can drive the DDT using only 3rd, TMP adds 4th on the two straights. SMP is 3rd only needing 4th on the back straight, etc.

Sure you can drop to 2nd in a couple places on the DDT or TMP, but the lap time difference is very small. For the average driver learning a track you can easily just leave it in one gear for 95% of the track.

Because the next gen of slush boxes will greatly outperform every manual transmission except those piloted by the best drivers.
I'm not going to argue that manuals shift faster, because clocks don't lie... but I will point out that the difference in shift times added up over a typical track make up less of a difference in lap time than the average driver on a track has in variance lap over lap just from inconsistency.

Driving manual is FUN no matter where I am or what I am doing (minus small percentage of time stuck in bad traffic etc.). In an auto I never felt this way, driving was more of a routine or even a chore at times. I used to willingly give up the drivers seat when someone else offered to drive, now I am jumping at every opportunity to get in my car and get on the road. All people have different passions and I guess for most people true driving is not one of them.

Manual and auto is a good comparison to photographers.

Ask any professional photographer and they will always tell you that manual is the way to go

Auto is more for the mainstream market share and is used by people who could care less about photography and want to pretend they are pros. Sure the auto is good, but it will never been the same as you tweaking all those settings to get that perfect shot!

The same goes about cars. Most people who buy auto don't care about cars...even the ones with GTR's....they only buy them because they marketed them as being FAST or because it shows they are rich.
Same reason why lambo's etc are all autos now. For marketing and because most buyers don't even know how to drive cause they only buy them for status.

People who buy manual cars want to control the car...not have the car do everything.

Soon Volvo will make cars that drive themselves......or Audi made a car that is capable of racing on a track without a driver....

People are becoming like...little 5yr and don't want to do anything. They don't even give the time to learn. They just want technology to do everything for them.

Might be a little harsh but I think the connection that manual gives you to whats going on in the car can and will not be replicated by even the best DCT. But saying that we are in the midst of what the last generation must have felt when things such as Traction control and ABS were made standard on cars. Neither is "necessary" and both do hamper the subjective driving experience but eventually it becomes the standard because that is progress. Today we are seeing electric steering kill off hydraulic steering, Turbos replacing N/A, etc... and whether or not we "enthusiasts" like it makes no difference because progress is progress and numbers seem to always win!

But more specific to transmissions; the automatic transmission has been around for so long, but it really was never as drivable as the manual transmission, the only thing that came close were sequential transmissions (but that has been too expensive to really become the standard) I think now that DCT are really giving manuals a run for their money in drivability we will really see them start to push manuals out. Its progress

Good analogy, but not for the reason you though.

If you look at real pro photographers shooting action sports, they're probably not taking anything in full manual mode. Just like a professional race car driver in almost any series is probably running a sequential gearbox.

For example, if you're shooting a car race... you'll probably pick most of the settings you want, but shoot in tV (shutter priority) so you can focus on panning and framing the shot you want and not worrying about setting shutter and aperture to properly expose a subject moving at high speeds.

I will personally buy manuals as long as they're available because I enjoy it more, but no one can argue that a sequential or DCT isn't faster. Straight line, or around a track they are quicker.

Gentlemen, there is no argument as to which is better than which. Yes, these new automatics are far more fuel efficient than possible with a manual, if actually driven. And driving like a gas miser, coasting most of the way, isn't driving. When it comes to personal preference, the choice is yours. Where as I own an AT, only because I felt less connected to a hydraulic clutch (no feel), I intend to purchase one. Driving an AT can be mundane at times and a MT keeps you busier. On the Road Course, I think it's up to the better driver actually.
