The manual mode on a CVT seems to me to kind of miss the point. I drove the '15 WRX with the CVT (dealer didn't have a manual at the time) and I found it easier just to let it shift for itself. I'm not a big fan of automatics or paddle shifters anyway, so I am biased. The wife is waiting on delivery of a new car with an 8spd auto and paddle shifters, so maybe I'll get to like them after some familiarity.

I drove a Sentra rental with a CVT and that really suited the car. As long as I was anticipating traffic and my throttle inputs were smooth, it just got on with it. Not sporting at all, but smooth and adequate performance for what it is.

I understand the technical advantages of a CVT and manually selecting from a preset set of ratios seems like a waste of capability in the name of "sporty". How about a rotary knob to manually dial up the ratio you want? Make the actuators powerful enough to adjust the pulley sheaves (or whatever technology it uses) from max to min as fast as a DSG can shift so you don't notice any delay as you rotate the knob. Your steering, throttle and brakes are analog. Why not your transmission?

Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive looks like it could form the basis for a sporting hybrid, if that isn't too much of an oxymoron for you. Conceptually, you can think of it as a planetary gearset, with the IC engine permanently connected to the planetary carrier, the electric motor attached to the sun wheel and final drive taken off the ring gear. The gear ratio between the IC engine and the wheels is controlled by how fast you spin the electric motor, and vice versa. Given how quickly an electric motor can spin up, or down, there is potential for very fast "shifts". Prius LFA?

Theoretically, a CVT could be awesome at the track. It could stay at redline the entire lap. Reality tends to not be so nice. Reality is a laggy throttle.

Actually, CVT programmed to stay at max power rpm would work great, it would have no lag because engine speed is constant and wheel speed doesn't change as much.

However, your ears might die from the constant drone of 7000rpm lol.

LOL some of us have been here since 2009. There was very little "news" about the car back then and we had like 10 threads just arguing what the name of the GT86 should be... Celica FTW

and dont discount the additional "smoothness" a CVT would provide.
No more cringing when you make that less than perfect shift right at the least optimal point in that turn...

I cannot find that thread for the life of me. I think I was championing either Toyota Trueno or Toyota Levin. "If its gonna be a freeking Scion" then I do remember saying it should be called the "aE", to follow Scion's naming pattern.

The name of this website stems from the FT86 concept that released in late 2009, hence everyone that was here at the start has an Oct. 2009 join date. Whats even less known is that a lot of the AE86 guys heard rumors about an 86 revival car about ~2 years earlier, when Moto-P (club4ag) was asked by Toyota to go to Japan to discuss this very car.

I think this is one of the first ones started back in 2009 and lasted all the way up to mid way through 2011. Me, Matador, and Jordo were flying the Celica flag and you originally backed the Sprinter name. Good times.

I'm extremely bored and have nothing else to do, so reading through the thread. This guy guessed correctly! lol

Same here, since im bored too, heres my input

My last car had a CVT, very strange feeling at first (feels like slipping tranny), then i got really bored of driving it... so bored where driving my mom's corolla became exciting
paddle shifters/shift points are pointless, and defeats the purpose of the CVT
makes sense for turbo cars because you would not lose boost

IMO CVT great for low HP<200 HP cars for higher HP cars it feels like the tranny is slipping, i do not enjoy that feeling at all
