drop in filter, the right way to install it?

I know its probably a noob question but I got my k&n drop in filter and I think I got it in the wrong direction. The flat side should be facing us while the sticking out part is facing towards the engine right? Seems to fit better with the flat side facing the motor, but doesn't look right.

part that sticks out should be facing toward the front of the car if i remember correctly. It's kind of counter intuitive.

Guess its right then. Just looks weird. Flat side to engine, OK I'll fix it.
