Why?

Fact is that your license plate is visible to everyone, every day, and most states do not allow information to be obtained about a plate owner publicly. There's no major safety concerns with posting a plate, it may be rude in your eyes but most people don't, myself included, give a shit.

Because your registration is public record. If I walked into the DOL and said XXX plate owner backed into my car they would release XXX owners information to me. If I wanted to steal a nice modded 86, this is the first place I would look. I don't want my address of record publically & permanently blasted on the interwebs.

Uh, not exactly true. There is requisite data to request some information such as this, esp in CA, and casually walking up with an arbitrary plate # won't get you that far. Plus that request would also be on record should someone be dumb enough to use that route for mischief...

There will be forms, fees, and the owner is notified. Public record goes both ways and this would not be an efficient way to jack someone. There are much easier, albeit unreliable means. Plus people post up on more than just this forum, and it would be equally easy to check FB, Instagram, and whatever else people use to share their personal info.

If it's rude is another discussion I suppose...

Yeah... owner of the plate will be notified that someone requested their info from the plate...

But yeah, plate should be covered to be courteous. Some people just don't want their plate shown. I usually don't block vanity plates though.
