You can get OBD2 extension cables fairly cheap on Amazon, if you don't want to bother ripping one out of a car.

I saw those. It would keep everything looking clean, which is the goal. I'd like to keep the OBD2 port open if I can, but an extension cable is the back up plan for now.

You can always throw a splitter on the OBD2 port, then connect the extension cable to that, and zip tie the other end under the steering wheel for easy access should you need it in the future.

Not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of that.

Definitely a good idea. That way you connect the splitter once and don't have to unplug it again.

I've found the pins in the OBD2 harness on the car side can loosen up quite easily. I had to repin mine once because of that and it was a pain. I went the extension cord route so i wouldn't screw up the car side of the harness again.

Alright guys, another question. I went to check my bluetooth version so I could download the latest firmware but I was greeted with the surprise that the unit lists "vtrend Volkswagen" as the canbus module. What does it show for everyone else? Is that normal for a unit that isn't supposed to be a canbus unit?

Thanks.

Mine is showing the same. No issue.

I'm not sure if this note worthy or not, but I've got llama installed and working well. I can now launch Poweramp by pressing the sd card icon on the car home screen. And if the car home screen is displayed for 15 seconds, as it's presently set, torque is automatically launched.

After reading through some of this thread I'm guessing most guys are using tasker to do those things. I've never used tasker but I am familiar with llama so I went with what I know.

The settings are simple enough: select events, + (to create an event), select conditions, active application, SDHC. Back out to save. Select action, run application, poweramp. Back out to save.

Next select + (to create another event) condition, tic Delay event and Cancel delayed if false, set the delay to 15 seconds or what ever you'd like. Back out to save. Select conditions, Active Application, car home. Back out to save. (I had two apps labeled as car home, of course the 50:50-90 rule kicked in. If you have a 50:50 chance, 90% of the time you get it wrong...) Select Add Action, Run Application, Torque. Back out to save.

You'll see a little icon of a lama in the status bar as llama will be running in the back if you want these to work. It's a light weight app though, so you shouldn't have to worry about it eating up resources.

Anyway, hopefully this helps someone.

Thanks again for all of the help guys.

Even when you do connect your phone, the selection of apps that work with Auto is limited--It'll grow over time, sure, but I can just about guarantee you'll run into a few apps that you want to use with it and can't.
Android Auto can run on an Android head unit. It can do exactly what you're saying it can't do. Yes, there will be dumb head units like the Alpine iLX-007 for CarPlay. No, Android Auto doesn't only run on QNX. Yes, it could potentially run on our head units. Please don't spread misinformation.

Link doesn't work. Looks like the app is in beta and their beta link on the store isn't working either but they do have a direct link to the apk:

http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/bitspice/automate/

Also, someone has "ported" android auto for headunits, haven't tested it yet:

What I said was based on reading articles on TheVerge and AndroidCentral.com. I would like to see your sources, please.

Interesting, but I don't want it at all.

AA on the other hand, requires Android apps to have special AA compatible extensions added. Clearly this can be a disadvantage of AA. Few music and messaging apps can be used with AA, and the only mapping/navigation app supported is Google's.
Quote:
So why would I want AA ?:

If you need access to ANY Android app, and not just the limited selection of AA compatible apps, then mirroring solutions will work better for you.

AA is more for people who want a solution that "just works" (although there are still many wrinkles to iron out), is well integrated, and has a common Google specified UI.

Less technically minded people will appreciate AA or Apple CarPlay, while Android power users may be happier with mounting a tablet or using an Android based (usually Chinese) HU.

An Android based HU which can run my Headunit app, may offer the best of both worlds. You can run any Android app when you need to, or run my HU app to get AA features. (At present nobody has reported success running my Headunit app on an Android based HU. I hope/presume I'll figure that out.)
AutoMate on the other hand seems cool.
