Interesting that the AX-USB-35EXT pops right in, great to know! I may have to go back and go that route so I get the aux port back.

Right now I can confirm the AX-TOYUSB from Sonic works perfectly to retain the factory USB port in the BRZ. I specifically ordered from Sonic as some reviews on Amazon stated they received the AX-TOYUSB-2 instead of the AX-TOYUSB.

Damn, I kind of wish I'd have ordered that one. The piece I have retains the 3.5mm jack but I've NEVER used it.

Oh well. Pic to come shortly.

I think some eBay vendors now have a similar aux+USB pod (to replace a Toyota OEM pod) with a 4-pole aux jack. Some people with older iPods might be interested in that, for aftermarket HUs that have a rear aux input with a 4-pole A/V 3.5mm socket.

See this post for the separate harness to retain your OEM 3.5mm stereo (3-pole) aux jack (in addition to the USB adapter).

What's the functional difference between a 3-pole and 4-pole aux jack?

3-pole is for stereo audio only (left + right + ground). 3.5mm plugs and jacks are sometimes called TRS (for Tip, Ring, Sleeve -- the 3 contacts).

4-pole adds video. These 3.5mm plugs and jacks are called TRRS (for Tip, Ring1, Ring2, Sleeve -- 4 contacts).

See first part of this post.

if you use the axxess adapter do you need a 4 pin connector or a 5 pin connector? they make both.

does it make a difference?\

i know the 4 pin is for subarus and the 5 pin is for toyota. but i bought a pioneer 5100nex and i just don't know which one i need

The HU doesn't matter, the Axxess adapter has the proprietary plug on one end and a standard USB plug on the other.

I'm 95% sure I used the 4 pin. Whichever was recommended for our car and/or the FR-S (same adapter) on Crutchfield's site.
