Anything more than 100 HP would be fine.

Regular Ford Focus and VW Golf haven't been mentioned yet, both below $20k US.

Shame the Fiesta ST won't work, good bang for your buck from what I hear. But you might be able to snag a deal on a lightly used Focus ST or GTI.

That's on the short list.

Yes. I'm done with rust. I've got a 12 year old car in the driveway that's already had both rocker panels replaced because they had fist sized holes in them. The drive line in it has no issues at all and could easily last me several years if that was the deciding factor. But the body is shot, it won't pass another inspection and I'm not waste more money on it. Anything that could be found used here is going to be the same. Unless I can find a unicorn. The only way to stop it is to get ahead if it with something like rust check. I could buy used and get a few years out of it, and that would be great for the short term, but if I take care of a car from the beginning it'll last two to three times longer. Also used car prices are even more stupid here. Looking for a used focus st, I could find one. It was about $22,000 before taxes, and a 14 hour drive away.

Fair 'nuff! Good luck in the hunt.

You can work your way into one of those for under $30k.
