No such thing as a free lunch, a trip to the dealership is time and gas money out of your pocket.

I paid $120 out of pocket to replace a coil pack, a free replacement from the dealership would have required two trips requiring an estimated ~80 miles of driving and 6 hours of my time minimum. If I value my time at $20/hour that's already a wash, given that we're talking about cars that run >$25k I'm sure I'm not the only one around here who takes home more than that from a daytime job which I'd have to take time off in order to get the service done expediently.

True, depends where the driver lives distance wise to the dealer. They could also ship it to him if it's inconvenient for him. Not everyone drives that far to a local dealer. He could be farther though. But there must be a Subaru or Toyota dealer near him, I think Alberta an area with plenty of dealerships.

Plenty of dealerships near me, one literally within walking distance to my workplace, the closest one that would do the work was 20 miles away.

Oh okay, why a dealership wouldn't service your car is beyond me. But I guess that's the way they do things there. In jersey i can take a new car for warranty repair at any dealership.To pay for a warrantied part and install it yourself is silly to me but it is what it is.

I called to schedule an appointment and described what was wrong and they said they would call me back and never did, guess they're so busy that they don't have time to call me back.

The other two dealerships I called both proposed several hours worth of downtime, I paid less doing it myself imo and I think I added a few minutes to my lifespan by not setting foot in their service departments due to my lack of tolerance when it comes to certain things. And again, they made no guarantee over the phone that they would actually replace the faulty part as the CEL was not persistent.

I should really do everyone a favor and stop posting in this thread.

That can be totally flipped as well. The guys that have had issues assume that everybody has had issues so paint all the dealers as bad. It could only be a few bad eggs but since they stink they take the attention away from the vastly greater number of good eggs.
I have no idea the proportion of good vs bad dealerships but would guess that the good is the greater of the two.
I will however completely concede that from what I have read here and elsewhere that it appears the larger the city gets the poorer the dealerships become. Maybe just a case of the guys in the larger cities can not picture that dealers can and indeed are good as I can that they are "all" bad.

It also helps to keep in mind that everyone has good and bad days. It could just be bad luck of the draw that the people who have bad experiences get the tech,detailer or whoever may answer the phone who was also having a bad/busy day. I can't be the only one who ever forgets to call someone back, especially when I haven't eaten in a while or having a really busy day.

I've had good and bad times at dealerships, one of the worst being some idiot did not tighten my oil filter (or somehow installed it wrong) after they replaced my oil pan and it launched off as I pulled away from the dealer (literally smacked into the firewall). That could have caused severe damage to my car (BTW this is my old car). Another time the dealer stripped and broke almost every bolt that fastened a large metal underplate to my mom's truck and it almost fell off the truck on the highway and could have become a very deadly projectile. I've also had people just take my car for a drive without permission. Numerous times of over torqued bolts, missing bolts or clips, sometimes minor things broken, and the tech just sends it back praying I don't notice (which they have gotten away with more than once with my nissan when I first got it). All that and much more makes me shy away from the dealer. But, there are times when I need to go.

Another thing is some of the techs just don't care and sometimes aren't even given the time to be careful under the whip of management. They see so many cars day in and day out, sometimes balancing more than one car at once, that some of them get the point of f it another car another repair I'll get this out of the way fast. Not all dealers are bad, but I've run into quite a few bad ones.

I'm pretty much at the point where if it is something I feel like fixing myself I'll do it, otherwise I'll take it to a dealer I'm mostly comfortable with and give it a good once over before leaving.

I can't help but notice how off-topic this thread got... went from a pedal cover falling off to bashing/whitelisting dealers

Can say and should say are two different things. I remember this one dude that got really pissed when I made a joke based on an old debate and he took offense to it. Strat is a smart guy and realizes when his passion may take him out of bounds and it is time to stop. I wish I had the same restraint sometimes (actually I guess I do since I just walk away from some things)
