Makes no sense to me. Basically all the parameters are the same besides some minor interior changes, larger exhaust tips and the spring rate. Most people will throw on an exhaust, springs/coilovers, and add a shark fin antenna anyways.
Smart thing to do is do research and look for what deal you can find and the condition.
From what I've seen, if you haven't had any tranny issues, engine issues after 30k miles, you're fine.
Save yourself the $3-5k and get yourself mods.
Bet "most" people leave it bone stock. Not even most people on this forum do all the mods you listed.
Like was said before not everybody is looking for the cheapest way possible there are loads of benefits to buying new even if you are mildly modding. Now if you are going RB, engine swap or just flat out changing everything then sure find a nice used one. I for one would not even think of buying one of these cars used. I read what people do to them here all the time and could end up with one of those.

The 2015-2016 sharkfin is so easy to install yourself, i just did it. It was 149.99 at a local shop by me. Im glad i went with a 2013 BRZ. So much cheaper to add the new yearly MINOR changes then to want a newer year and pay close to 30k.

From the JDM site but they are digital color renderings, a real life pic of the Legacy with Lapis Blue (K3X) is below and a Forester in Pure Red (M7Y)
If you scroll through the photo gallery in the car and driver report, it has this picture:

I wonder if that is the Oceanic?

Why would you be worried when "most" people leave the car as is as you stated? If anything, that would leave you with a lot more better options. The only type you probably wouldn't want to touch is a previously FI one, but when talking percentages, those are rare.

The biggest benefit to buying new is warranty. But even if the car is sold to you with 20k miles, your left over dealer warranty still exists. Usually most design issues happen within the warranty period.

That sucks
So credit is not a big factor when buying used?

Yeah I am aware of that but I just meant it would be cool if the 2013 models had the shark fin and backup camera. I obviously could of live without those minor changes but still it would definitely make up for the crickets.

Not the properly modded well taken care of used ones that worry me. It is the poorly done or stock ones that have had the living crap beat out of them but you can't tell that do.
Besides somebody has to buy new for there to be used ones. So many people yell buy used all the time and then say "look how the sales are dropping this car is doommed" in the next thread (not talking about you there) .

When I first bought this car I thought the exact same way.

Now I know that I wouldn't bother buying a car like this if I wasn't going to beat the living crap out of it.

If the car can't handle having the living crap beaten out of it before I buy it why would I buy a garage queen and have it break down on me?

As long as the maintenance is done and I have done enough research on the car to know what I'm getting I would absolutely buy 'a car like this' used. There absolutely exists 86's today that are ticking time bombs, no denying that, that's why inspection is important. I'll take a car with photos of it on track and "meticulous maintenance receipts available" in the ad over "little old lady owned, never revved! dealership serviced!" every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

We're not talking about a Ferrari with a $5,000 timing belt job sneaking up on you that could result in tens of thousands of dollars of damage if ignored.

I understand your situation is different, you need a reliable DD, aside from the cold and commuting you aren't terribly hard on cars which favors newer gently driven cars to get what you need out of them.

But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Actually you are saying what I was trying to but since using phone got lazy. I agree with every word. When I said beat to crap I ment the guys that don't take care of it or are just bad drivers overall not the guys that know what they are doing. Mine certainly falls under the classification of driven hard but taken care of.

That better NOT be the new red! That is like a nasty maroon color! Totally unfitting for a sports car!

The press pictures supposedly showed the 2016 FR-S in the red. It even has the rear-view camera.
