I would definitely try a polish before stripping it--salvage it if you can. I'm really curious why it didn't come out shiny though.

I would say it looks like maybe you were using too much pressure when you sanded. FWIW I went all the way to 2000 grit. I don't see how people get a decent finish without it.

Yeah. I sanded it too much. I will try to polish it. If it doesn't turn out good, I will re-do it. Any idea how can I remove the paint?

I used the VHT niteshades smoke and it had a real nice finish to it. Then I had a Rustoleum clearcoat can so I figured it can't hurt right? This clearcoat totally hurt the finish and I was pretty pissed. I'm going to have to pull them again. I also got carried away and made them too dark and I'm a ticket magnet now lol. So should I wet sand with 2000 first and see what I get? Will this lighten it up plus give me a better finish? I'm assuming....

This looks really good, I'm digging the red and then the black on top of it. My tails are just smoked right now, any idea on what I should use to remove the existing tint/paint on it?

I highly recommend spraymax 2k spraycan clearcoat or a professional clearcoat.
Its good to see someone actually listening to my advice on the spraymax clear. It really makes all of the difference.

I noticed an earlier post of yours, and just so you know, you do not have to sand the light down prior to laying down the metalcast.

Lights still look brand spanking new.

My lights still look awesome as well. I can't recommend the spraymax enough. It looks like a professional clear coat job.

Thanks for the update, @xxscaxx
I love the way your tail lights turned out and am glad to hear they've been holding up well, especially since I've been preparing to replicate the process you used.

But before getting started, I had noticed (a while back) that you mentioned:

Do you remember exactly what you used to clean them before paint?

I used rubbing alcohol and an air gun to try to keep all the dust off. Good luck, you will be happy with the results!

Love this mod. First thing I did to my car when the temp tags were still on in.

Do beware when you wet sand that you don't go too hard on the edges. By the time I buffed everything out it got a bit faded in a few spots. I kinda half-a$$ed mine and they looked good, but they could use a touch up after a year.

You don't wanna do that. The plasti-dip smoke is very translucent and does not transmit a lot of light. I don't think you would be able to see the turn signals very well during the day.

Did this to my car over the past couple weeks. I used VHT red, the only thing I didn't do that I wished I did was wetsand the plastic before I did any spraying. But all in all they came out great!

Looks perfect.

Did you swap out the yellow turn signal with a red one? If not, did it turn orange now? lol
