At least they aren't like the plugs on the good old carbureted V8s where you had to clean and regap them about every 5,000 miles or so. That would just plain suck.

I had a very long look under the car and I can't get my head around getting the coil packs out either. I can barely fit a few fingers between the packs and the frame rails. It's extremely tight with maybe 3cm of clearance. There are a few that have claimed to have done it with wobble and universal extensions but I'm still skeptic about how they removed the packs without damaging them.

I believe the coil packs needed to be bent to remove them.

If you do the services yourself then does that invalidate the warranty?

No, you just have to have proof you've done it (receipts, etc). I just prefer to not deal with the hassle under warranty.

Downtown Subaru charged me $136 for an oil change.
Shortly after, I bought a 6-pack of the black Tokyo Roki oil filters ($50), a filter wrench from Canadian Tire, a Mityvac vacuum excavator (about $100), and I've been getting my oil from Toyota dealerships for about $45-50 (off of memory). I've done 2-3 oil changes myself so far - the oil change part is easy - the toughest part is getting rid of the old oil without making a mess... |

But on the other hand I have friends from netherlands, germany etc, say that they love it! and the media coverage etc that they got there was grossly exaggerated. Yeah its great, it doesnt snow ( well once in 10 years light snow gone in 30mins), no serious earthquakes, no tornados or hurricanes, or any other natural disaster you can think of..

Fair enough! For me, the $10 in savings is outweighed by having to dispose of the oil afterwards. Plus, I'm pretty lazy

I change my own oil because:
Its quicker and can be done at home at any time of day I like to try various oil brands (Toyota, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Pennzoil Platinum, Eneos) I change my oil and filter frequently @ 5000 km I buy oil on sale and stockpile I prefer Tokyo Roki filters Its convenient using an EZ oil valve The novelty hasn't worn off I leave the jugs at CT service overnight where there's usually a bunch of other oil dropped off.
