Lug Nut Issues!

I've been dealing with a frustrating problem that seems pretty stupid...

Bought some ESM wheels a couple weeks ago and some Muteki SR48 lugs to accompany those, assumed that would be a good choice as everyone seems to have them

Now the wheels are dual drilled of course (ccw replicas etc knockoff wheels fun times) for 5x100/5x112. Naturally the 5x112 pattern gets the normal size lug bore in the wheel that fits any tool.

However the 5x100 bolt pattern has a super narrow bore for where the lug nuts go. I measured it and it sits pretty much right at .880" The mutekis are 17mm hex external for which pretty much all sockets sit between .9 - .92" so there is no way to fit the tool in the hole.

I had the key that came with the sockets machined down at work, but we didn't go down enough so I ground it some more after hours. Looks like shit, but it works. However the wall thickness is very thin in the thinnest of locations and I don't trust it long term

Any suggestions for lug nuts? Maybe something with an internal hex for an allen key or something? Do I just grind a new one down and hope for the best that it doesn't crack at 89 ft lbs?

The wheels are on the car now but you know its not an ideal situation

Spline type. Don't risk modifying the socket, once it goes out you'll be assed out. Maybe someone here can measure the outside diameter of the spline socket.

That would be fantastic if it fit. I emailed one supplier of muteki spline lugs they told me their socket for that sat at .90", maybe there's another company with a narrower setup?

Not many sockets are much smaller than 23mm or .9"
Only other solution I can think of is where the lug nut is tightened from the inside with a hex key. Something like this-

I had a set before and they worked fine, just be careful with the key or get an extra as the edges can be rounded off pretty easily.
check gorilla or a local parts store.

was going to suggest these... had them before as well and my experience was similar with regards to the edges. not a big fan

Your wheels are forcing you to use "tuner" lug nuts.

Solutions:
1) get tuner lugs
2) get rid of wheels and get wheels that have friendlier lug holes
3) get rid of wheels and keep it stock

I had the same issue with my Enkei Performance KLAMP wheels. I even bought the Muteki nuts thinking they would fit since they are tuner nuts, but they didn't. Anyway, the Gorilla spline nuts work for me. The outside diameter of the socket is 0.802 as seen in the photo. I originally had their closed nuts (came with the wheels), then once I put in ARP studs, I got the open ones.

No, they are 17mm lugs and will still fall into the same category

The "tuner" lugs I speak of is old nomenclature... it's basically a lug that uses a hex key (or similar) and is not removed by a standard socket.

For OP's wheels, he needs internal drive lug nuts that has a key. I call it "tuner" lugs because that's what I was selling for certain types of wheels on the market.

Thanks guys, the wheels are going to stick around of course but that is kind of what I figured. @tlim, thanks for the suggestion .80" would fit without any issues I'll look into those.

So "tuner" lugs or small diameter spline it is. I talked to a shop that sold the Muteki spline lugs but they won't work as the OD is about .90" even with those which is a shame.
