I'm around 25mpg on E85 and similar driving style.. I would see how much you use the brakes, as that is the largest contributor to gas mileage droppage

I get 32 to 34 all the time and drive like that ( car would probably just stop if all of a sudden I shifted at under 4500 or so). The difference may be that for every mile of city stop and go, I drive 200 highway with the cruise on.

I usually downshift to slow down, so unless I'm coming to a complete stop I don't use the brakes.

Yeah my commute has about 20 miles of highway but of that 20 miles about 5 is stop and go and the rest is trying to get around the idiots who go 55 mph in the left lane.

For a commute that long, get the most comfortable fuel efficient car.you can afford. I like Lexus so I would recommend a CT200h with the tech package.

But like somebody above mentioned, I'd just relocate or find someyhing closer. I do a 45min commute one-way in my FRS (62kms one-way) all highway and that about as much as I'd take. Even still, I'm still looking for something closer. I couldn't imagine doing 4 hours daily of travel downtime. Such a waste of life.

I do the 4 plus a day only twice a week but get paid mileage for it (way more than enough to pay for the car and all the operating costs) so it is a bit of a different story. A lot of my job is just listening in on conference calls to provide guidance on projects so I can even do that while driving.

While I don't have a long daily commute. I make 3 hour long trips (each way, 6 round trip total) every few weeks from my home in upstate to a friends down in Long island and I find it quite comfortable. It's not a caddy, or even a corolla and its not gonna feel like your floating, you will feel all the bumps in the road HOWEVER the seats make it very comfortable.

I took it on its first long road trip in the heat of the moment and drove 10 1/2 hours to Ohio, spent the day and drove 10 1/2 hours home. I have to say I was suprised that when I got out of my car that I was not sore. I had a little ache in my ass from sitting in one position and i only stopped twice each way.. but man I did not feel like I was beat down..

Now I had a honda fit before this ( and a few older "luxary" cars before the fit) and so far this is one of the more comfortable cars I've driven in with regards to the seats and a sore back.. My fit made me feel like I was stuck in a panini press the entire time.

However expect to feel the road, and its bumps.

I'm 6'1 230lbs BTW

I used to own a 93 Prelude in college, and my back would hurt from 1 hour commutes, so this is a serious concern. Looking to hear back from yall.

Thanks.

3-4 hour commute for only 15-17 miles in Boston? Do you have something against mass transit? Isn't Boston's subway system pretty good?

Haha...it is, but Boston's subway system is really only good for about 10 of those miles from Downtown at the very most. I actually prefer mass transit, but my commute would be one and a quarter hours. I'd rather take a 2 mile detour and drop off the Mrs since she's on the way to my office. If I could take a train direct, I would, but I'd either be on 2 different trains and a bus while paying to park or walk half a mile to go bus, train, bus. I'd rather spend my time in the BRZ even if it's in bumper to bumper traffic.

Sorry, this is off topic from the OP's question but are you just going off by what the readout tells you or are you actually documenting your fill ups into a fuel mileage keeper app of some sort? I fill up every time at the same pump for the most part and plug in the numbers every time. I put my foot down most of the time when I'm not on the highway and take it to 7,000 rpm's almost every other shift. I average 29 mpg's according to the app and this is with mostly highway commuting around 65-75 mph Mon-Fri. Mileage keeper in the app store is free, you should try it out for a few fill ups and report back. The readout on the dash isn't telling you what you're averaging on the tank, just what you're getting at that time but I'd be impressed to see mid 30's.

Two setting for counter. First is current and second is average. Doubt that it is 100% accurate but I call it close enough for my purposes.

Off car readout. It's safe to assume imho that its 90% correct when you drive 150ish miles (x2=210), on a straight-away. HWY 101 from Salinas, CA to Santa Maria, CA on same tank of gas round trip.

I shift at 2-3k rpm, rev match, mostly drive at 60mph and take off as fast as a granny on her way to Safeway. Just came back from Santa Maria today and got 39mpg, but I was going 66mph.

Now, if I drive in town, partial highway and/or heavy traffic... 27-29mpg. If unlucky and drive like a fool, 24mpg!

I'll get an app though. I have 3 more trips down there this month.

i drive from pennisula in the bay area 38 miles to the east bay, over a bridge on a highway (HIGH traffic area) then through 2 back roads. commute takes about 1 hr 45 min on average. i have a 6MT BRZ and i love it, the clutch is light and not that much travel and it gets great gas mileage.
