I think Subaru just can't strike a deal with Toyota & this is holding back on the development for 86. Just the fact Subaru have to keep the production at 1:7 should say enough about it.

But.. But... The experts at 86 club told me that the Brz was perfect and there wouldn't be a refresh until 2025. They made fun of every person posting about power upgrades. What happened???

Subaru officially quotes power at 345bhp and 332lb ft of torque, but Subaru's Dominik Infante told TG.com the concept car actually produces closer to 450bhp. "They quote it lower on the stand, but that's just an agreement between the Japanese manufacturers," he smiles. "In the race series they downgrade their power, but in reality - in this concept car - that engine makes 450."

What a load of bullshit. I wonder if Dom's tooth twinkled when he said these words.

Were I shopping for an STi, I'd want the drivetrain with none of the visuals, same would apply to a hot BRZ.

You should then buy a German car, you know VW Golf R or BMW M235i.

So instead of going rice you recommend he go sauerkraut?
He already said he didn't want an ugly car.

Depends on what it came with - if it was that concept and the stock, current FA20? Nope. Not a chance in hell.

If it looked like the concept, but with the FA20DIT and at least 250hp, sure.

Yes, but of the 100,000 or so Twins sold, what percentage is that? I'm guessing way less than 5% (5,000 cars). Even if it is 10,000, that is not a market, that's a niche for this car and best handled by the aftermarket. The problem is that people that are going to mod cars will mod them regardless of the base they start with, and that is the market that has $40,000 in a $25,000 car.

It is not your typical buyer, which is what a manufacturer cares about with the exception of an occasional halo car that they sell at either high prices (Corvette/Porsche/etc) or high volumes (Mustang/Camaro/Etc).

The 86 is neither. I say that because Toyota/Subaru are building and selling exactly the number they plan on selling. If it was underperforming expectations you would see more dollars poured into marketing. If it was overperforming, there would be a waiting list and you wouldn't see them on showroom floors.

My personal opinion, and really that is all it is, is that yes, if the car had more horsepower they would have sold more of them but only if it performed similarly to a same priced Mustang or Camaro. That puts you still in the $25,000 to $35,000 range at best in the open market.

I'd pick VW Golf R over the other any time of the day.

You realize this car is more of a concept/prototype than anything else? Not saying there will not be a refresh at some point but it most likely would not be even close to the performance numbers quoted here for the masses. Tada recently stated there will not be forced induction with these cars..

You're joking, right? It's not bullshit at all. This is the engine for a professional racing series. The engine has to be reliable and they restrict power in the GT300. Obviously, it's capable of making much more.

It means nothing though, because no regular FRS/BRZ/86 owner will ever have that engine.

To be honest, I haven't read through the 15 pages of this thread... Sorry if this is a repost...

But I did find this...

http://www.subaru.ca/WebPage.aspx?We...rmance_Concept

One huge excerpt that I found interesting was this:
Quote:
The STI Performance Concept was developed for display purposes to announce the launch of the North American expansion of the STI brand and performance division of Subaru. There are no plans for Subaru to build or produce any production model resembling the STI Performance Concept, including a turbocharged BRZ. This is strictly a concept vehicle with a specially designed race engine prepared for track-use only.
Direct from Subaru's mouth: No Turbo BRZ... And the car is simply a concept. Nothing more. It will never see production.
