I take all my stuff to Mert at RBMS Autocare in Hayward. He's been working on my car for awhile. Check him out. Mostly works on Subaru's and Evo's but might be willing to look at your Scion.

The plot thickens... Gordon from Edge called me, and we talked about shop rates. He says that 5 hours is reasonable and that Subaru charges 7.7 hours for the work, so he's within the realm of reasonable. It was nice that he called me, that speaks very well of his business acumen. Still, I won't be going to Edge any time soon.

For reference, a shop local to me in South SF was able to do a spring swap (which would take longer since you gotta take apart the struts and put the new springs, put it all back together) in 1 hour 45 minutes...
And when I went to pick up the car it was only 2 guys working on my FR-S, some old school Mercedes, and a S2k at the same time.... |

The price isn't the issue... supply and demand. Quality costs.
However, 4-5 HOURS!?! Me and a 17-year-old helper did eight of these in one day... including two at the same time in 50 minutes, wheels up to wheels down. Me thinks this shop doesn't want your business and was just trying to get rid of you.

donoman - I'll speak to you as I feel this thread has gone sideways and wanted to catch it before we end up meeting at 86 or BMW CCA event and giving each other the evil eye.
I respectfully disagree with your opinion of Edge motorworks but I will respect your opinion about the high cost of the work you were looking for. As car people, we're always looking for the best quality work for the lowest price possible. If there was a shop locally in Dublin that offered a rate of $250 for a spring install and alignment, I'd most likely do the same. So even I would agree with the suggested choices near you. Best wishes on your install. |

OK I just did the suspension today and it took me 3 hours from start to finish, including a brake pad swap, and this was my first time doing it on this car. I can safely say that if you are taking your car to Edge, you are getting ripped off.

Not to beat a dead horse but even from a business perspective you don't charge the customer and extra 3 hours in case something happens lol...
Anyway I wouldn't say their prices are a rip off, you gotta pay to play, specially if its a big baller shop, however the misleading labor times would make me stay farrrrrrrr away from there.... IN fact I bet most of their business comes from ignorant car owners who just have money to blow and want a turnkey experience. Almost like a salesman preying on the senior citizen couple sitting in the service drive.... shame shame shame
