Visit one: The car had the old silicone intake hose (instead of the new pipe). So first thing we did was clean the MAF and swap the tube for the pipe. Next we rotated the MAF (trying different positions). This helped some, and also made it worse depending on rotation. In the end the we were not pleased with the -20% fuel Long Term Learned fuel trim, but it was not throwing a code.

Visit 3: The reflash appeared successful. Until we revved it up. Then the fuel trims went haywire again and the car was uber rich (-35%).
Hey, it all sounds like my case! (minus the ECU communication issues and reflash)

This is really weird!
I do have HID lights, but they are stock, so probably shouldn't cause the same issue, or is there still a chance for that?

This is an interesting new detail for me. Can the MAF rotation make a big difference? Maybe I should try that? How do you do it? The sensor housing/connector is held with two screws, so there is no play there. Do you rotate the sensor itself?

OEM HID's won't cause the issue. MAF housing orientation can have a large affect though. The orientation of the MAF housing should be perfectly parallel to the ground. Meaning facing precisely straight up.

Sincerely,

Zach

In the end the we were not pleased with the -20% fuel Long Term Learned fuel trim, but it was not throwing a code.

Visit 2: At the car would no longer communicate. 4 different lap tops and cables, 3 different scanners and my Solus. Nothing would talk. We requested JR send over the CARB tune in a zipped file so we could verify no corruption in the map and re-flash with the newest version of EcuTeK software.

Visit 3: The reflash appeared successful. Until we revved it up. Then the fuel trims went haywire again and the car was uber rich (-35%). So, after speaking with Oscar Sr and Jr we decided to remove all 4 aftermarket HID ballasts from the car. It worked. It would appear the RF interference from the DDM Tuning HID kits (4 of them) was causing corruption in the communication. The issue went away as soon as the HID's were disconnected.

I am now waiting for some feedback from the customer. He was planning on swapping out the HID's for LED's. He will continue to monitor the fuel trims and report back.

For now, any owners who might be experiencing odd issues like this might want to check the install of their aftermarket HID's (if so equipped).
I've observed this on more than a few cars with low quality ballasts.

The MAF should be pointed "straight up".

You rotate the entire section of tube the MAF sensor is located on.

OEM units are "insulated/shielded" and do not emit RF interference like the aftermarket kits do. The OEM units are tested for this exact issue.

You rotate the entire length of tube that the MAF housing resides on. The MAF sensor should be flat/parallel to the ground for optimum accuracy.

Almost 15 years of working on Subies. 5 of those years running this shop. First time I have seen aftermarket HID's cause this issue. I even have a set of DDM running my wifes fogs on her 08 LGT. No issues in 6+ years (although her HID head lamps are Denso/Phillips and not OEM).

Many, many of our customer use DDM Tuning HID kits. They are scary cheap and DDM is 2 exits down the road. Not saying the kits are anything special or even "good", but I had not seen this happen before.

You learn something new every day and thought sharing might help others.

We will have to meet up sometime sir. We are separated by far more traffic than miles. A meeting of the "Mikes".

From what I've read, they're not anywhere near as effective when you have FI.

Same as what I have been reading just didn't see any testing to prove it?

Has to do with runner length not being really relevant with the amount of air being forced through.

Well since Im buying @*LongFella 's JRSC'd FRS I went thru and read the full 82 pages of this thread. Definitely learned a a lot and prevented a fair amount of Noob questions I would have ended up having. Looking forward to getting this ride and bringing it up North. Hwy 1 will be a fun drive from SoCal up here to the Bay Area.
