Hence late reply. I would not buy an exotic supercar. Ever. I don't think they are much fun outside the racing tracks, and I prefer driving on backroads through nice rural landscapes. And if you drive a Lambo or an 'Egg in such places, you will be perceived as an a$$hole. I like to stop and chat with random people. As long as there's big shiny Toyota badges on my car, I look like an enthusiast, someone slightly peculiar; someone it just might be fun to talk to. Douches in too-expensive cars makes ordinary people clam up. In most places, anyway. What I really would like to do, is collect cars and motorcycles. Old, odd, funny, pretty, and sporty. I'd import a brand new Hindustan Motors Ambassador with all the options (which are power brakes and AC) from India. I'd track down a 1958 Cadillac Coupe De Ville and have it restored to mint 100% original. A late 1940's Indian Chief. Vincent Black Shadow. 1948 Buick Roadmaster. Jaguar E-Type. Austin Healey. Triumph Spitfire. Etc. You get the picture. And I'd keep my GT86 as my daily. Last edited by Sarlacc; 03-20-2015 at 08:59 PM. |

I am pretty sure that to 99.9% of the "ordinary people" our cars seem just as exotic and they would not differentiate between you and a Lambo, owner Toyota emblems or not. Now car enthusiasts may jump to the conclusion because we actually know the difference in value but if you actually talk to some of these "a$$holes" you just may find out they are just like you or me. In fact many are exactly like us and just saved and scrimped for years to get their dream car. Would I want a high dollar supercar? Nope, but not because I would worry that people would think I am unapproachable but because they simply do not interest me.

I've seen many frowning looks at my car brightening into a smile when the Toyota badge is noticed. Because Toyota is the most common car brand here, well know as reasonably priced, sensible cars owned by normal people. Supercars are a lot more expensive in Northern Europe than anywhere else, because of insane taxes on horsepower and displacement. So, supercars are extremely rare. The few that exists are seldom seen other than on exhibitions and other controlled events. There has been exactly one Koenigsegg owned by a citizen of Norway. He's a public figure known for unusual financial transactions. He crashed the car, media feasted on the story and the whole nation snickered at him. "A clown with too much money got what he deserved". I would not want to be that clown. Many years ago I worked for a high profile consulting firm, the one with the highest fees and the sharpest suits. One employee once parked a brand new Porsche outside the HQ, and was told by management to never bring that car to the office or to any client. The reason given was: "Because it's too flashy, looks too expensive, it sends all the wrong signals." So I ask you, how likely is a situation like that in North America? I honestly don't know, but my guess would be not very likely at all. |

Actually I bet there are even guys here that would say the same thing as you based on the fact that their whole exposure to the expensive car crowd are the rich kids that got a Lambo for their 16th birthday!

Anyway, that a$$hole thing got blown up ever so slightly.
The real honest truth is, since money is of no consequence in this thought experiment, I'd rather own a 1948 Buick Roadmaster than a brand new 1200HP Bugatti Veyron. Because that old Buick has a soul, looks better, is more suited for the roads I drive, and is far less likely to kill me. |

I would buy whatever car I wanted, because I wanted it. Whether it's super expensive or not. I happen to really want a 991 Carrera TTS, although I will wait patiently for EvoMS to develop a GT700 kit for it. I don't want it because it's a Porsche and a status symbol, I want it because I think it's sexy and fun to drive. What other people might think has no bearing on my decision.
And having moderated a fairly sizable exotic car forum, you get the same mix of awesome people, douchebags, and new guys asking which spark plug is best. They're people just like the rest of us. After you've spent a few years in Orange County, California, exotics and supercars are a dime a dozen, unless you've got something truly unique. It's the person behind the wheel that makes the difference. |

People were suggesting various *practical* work trucks. A friend had one back at university in the mid 70s. You could actually go out and buy one back then. I don't recall them having a 4x4 option, or seeing any around. They didn't really pan out because rotory and low rpm torque. But they were cool as F and I coveted it at the time ![]() edit: more pics

This is a great thread because no matter what we talk about it is still on topic if you own a 86!

I'd love to do that as well, although I might have to skip the '82 Chevy Chevette. I have thought about trying to buy one favorite car for every decade I've lived in, its just so hard to pick....
