Good luck with the STI, they look pretty good to me.

Totally different kind of car though; four doors, all wheel drive, not great on fuel consumption.

As Tcoat already stated; watch out for "the grass is greener" mentallity. It's an expensive ideology (a system of ideas and ideals, especially one that forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy) to cave in to.

The Grass is Greener Syndrome is a real thing and we have seen go wrong it many times on here (for both people coming to or leaving the 86).

Too lazy to pull the text book but a 10 second Google search pulled this piece of wisdom that sums up the whole "but maybe that car is what I want" mentality perfectly:

"This is where the element of fantasy comes in, and with the fantasy comes projection. We’re going to want what we don’t have, and there’s a fantasy that we’ll get what we don’t have, and that the parts that we’re currently happy with won’t be sacrificed in this change. However, what ends up happening is that after the “honeymoon phase” of making the change, we find ourselves wanting to flip to the other side of the fence again because we discover that there are other things that we don’t have, and because the novelty of the change wears off. It ends up being true, that we always want what we don’t have, even if we’ve already jumped the fence several times."

Just based on looks alone, I don't think I could purchase a WRX/STI. The 86 really is a sexy car.

To each their own - there are pros and cons for both the STI/ft86, but if the 86 didn't satisfy you and you're constantly craving for more out of it then perhaps you did make the right move.

I don't get it. I have always done tons of research on every car that I have purchased. I've never regretted a purchase. Can't imagine spending a relatively large sum of money on a car that you didn't spend enough time to research.

Idk I had a 2015 wrx following me on one of our cruises. We lost him in the first few turns of the mountain road. I was kind of disappointed because I expected it to be on my ass the whole time but alas he was gone. And when we finally stopped at the end of our run, him and the rest of the group took an eternity to finally catch up. They are quick in a straight line but I feel that most of the driving fun is lost in that car.. Just my opinion though. I really should have an AWD car where I live but I just love my sports cars

What made you say this?

This cliche fanboy response really gets old.

I could list plenty of "V8" sports cars that can out-handle a twin.

Honestly...the new STI doesn't even look like a Camry..it's just a car...with a big wing and that's the biggest problem. Where is the character of the old Subaru's?

Unclear if OP is actually looking at an STI since he is not confident in his MT abilities.

STI does not come with an AT option.

awd just has a different type of fun than rwd. canyon drivdriving is really different than track driving. Also, anecdotal evidence of who is more reckless on a public road is a poor indicator of a cars potential.

You really honestly can't push the car on a canyon road. Especially at corner exit, which is the whole point of awd. Driving a good 4wd at the track like an sti is pretty exhilerating, in a different way than rwd. the twins will have a sharper turn in and be fun and responsive with mid corner balance and all that usual jazz. In a 4wd the entry and mid corner isn't as exciting but omg when you mash the gas at corner apex and the car grips and turns BETTER and rockets you out of the corner, pretty amazing.

Edit: if you think the twins and sti are in the same class of cars in terms of track performance you are SORELY mistaken

from one bugeye owner to the other, THIS. ^

(although yours is soooo sexy.. mine just has an RA 5spd and some other fun parts/tune on the stock td04/ej205)

New generations look so horrid. Even the GR/V gens retained a small ounce of flavor.. albeit they looked a little too mazdaspeed3ish

"Quick in a straight line".. uhh bud all gen WRXes are average or slow in the straights, all things considered and relative to other sport offerings in that price range.

As @totopo so eloquently pointed out, it's a different kind of drive and if you can tune out some of the understeer, AWD will smash the RWD on most track configurations, apples to apples, all else equal
