215mm is 8.4 inches wide and with a 45 sidewall it will stretch just fine. I ran 225/35 on a 9.5 all around with no issues and currently have 245/35 on 10.5's.

I agree with you. #1 is obviously true. Anyone suggesting otherwise is trying to find further justification for themselves that tire stretching is the best, or just arguing. People get defensive and angry when they hear that their "agressive" look would actually make them slower or isn't optimal. Same with people insisting dropping their car to the ground on cheap coilovers increased their performance because they feel less body roll. For looks its fine to a point (I don't like it, but if someone wants to do it I dont care), but you really can't say that the tires were intended to be that way, or perform at their best that way.

Let me be clear: if you want to stretch tires and you know what you are getting into, you're fine. If you know what the risks are, you're fine.
But for the OP and any other armchair mechanic out there that doesn't know what the downside of stretching tires are, you should ask and answer the 3 or 4 questions I brought up. Stretching tires does exactly that: stretch the sidewall to mount a tire on a wider wheel. But anyone who has seen enough tires in their lifetime will know that, much like any other mass-produced good, tires can be prone to factory defect or failure. Again: the factory tires have a warranty on them via Michellin. If you don't care about warranty and are paying for all repairs to the car out of pocket, ignore all my posts in this thread. If you are being cheap by using stock tires until you get newer tires later, you should reconsider your priorities when it comes to car mods. -alex |

Ok, so as a guy that has no clue whether stretched tires are good or bad I thought I would do some research. Although there are a billion blog or forum opinions on the subject I could not find one solid authoritative article. The stance guys stand by it as fine, the race guys say it is dangerous and the shop guys say it is ok sometimes and not others.
I did find that a lot of shops will not do it for liability reasons so that is kind of telling. I also found a pile of scary ass pictures of what can go wrong with them that alone would have me saying no way on earth! So... if looking for support for their argument both sides can find all sorts on the good old interweb!

It's bad for traction, tire wear, and can lead to more serious problems but chances are you can get away with it. For short term it'll be fine, but you'll likely end up paying a couple extra hundred dollars to dismount, mount and balance twice. You might want to consider just selling your stock wheels and tires and picking up the correct size the first time.
I had my BRZ OEM tires stretched onto 17x8 wheels before I sold my STi and it really looked like garbage IMO. I can only imagine what them being stretched onto 17x9 would look like. |

Except the Primacies are a very narrow 215. Both sets of snows I've had (205/50/17's - Barum Polaris 3 and now Hankook iPike RS) were noticeably wider than the stock tires. The tread width on the Primacies is 190mm.
