Damage from over revving is usually caused by floating a valve and having it make contact with a piston. You'd know pretty much immediately if you had done that.

Usually there's a ka-boom and smoke and some other fun sounds, like a party in your engine bay!

Ya there is usually little room for doubt when you take out an engine on over rev!

Most over rev damage I've seen didn't blow up entirely, but it did run like crap after with a damaged piston/valve. No holes in the block or anything. If you really over rev it then it can get much worse.

In any case, you'd know immediately.

Yes. I don't think my car would have let me select first at that speed/rpm even if I was intentionally trying to.

I am able to get mine into 1st at about 25~30 mph. I usually don't but I have when anticipating accelerating immediately after braking at a red light.. which is bad behavior incidentally.. but yea, mine will let me into first even at some higher speeds. haven't tried anywhere above 30 that I can recall.
Related to orig post, I accidentally did the similar once going from 6 to 3rd instead of 5th.. oops. but its been along time now and nothing bads happened.

+1 to just about everything said in the thread so far. No, since clearly I have to clarify lol, I am not a mechanic.

To me, it looks like you hit rev limit before any damage was done anyway. Did the throttle cut pretty hard? Looks like just locked up to save the engine from incidents like this. Admittedly I have hit the throttle limit like that in the past, once. It is definitely enough to make your stomach drop when it happens the first time.

25/30 is like 2500/3000 rpm in second gear, just need to ride out that torque dip to the money.

I can downshift from 2nd to 1st more easily if I rev match which is rather difficult considering how high in the rpms I have to catch it
