@Sportsguy83 why did you swap out the FX350/300?
Thoughts on the ACT you have now in comparison?

Not to grave dig, but I went with a southbend stage 3 drag 6 puck with a sprung hub and stage 2 FW(Heavier) and I just found out their Pressure Plates and friction discs are made by exedy which was up until now backordered until they refine their design. Curious to see how it is, never driven a 6 puck clutch. Will report back!

Lots of blipping instead of constant throttle from a stop usually since they chatter a bit at low rpm initial engagement. But it should be pretty nice with a heavier flywheel. I wish I kept my stock flywheel.

I think this is the worse feeling i've gotten since i bought the car. Not sure why but after my clutch install i had no chatter, nothing just nice feel and very steerable car. This is ACT HD street with streetlite FW. Just hit about 200 miles on the clutch and was giving it a little more gas than the typical <3k and 0psi driving. Its a hot day with the AC on and the fans were running often.. my car sounds like a damn diesel beettle. Holy crap i feel like dumping this thing in a lake. The chatter goes away when the AC is off and then the rpm's go up a little but idle is horrible. Sometimes it doesn't do it under same conditions then some others its bad. Any words or comfort?

On my last car, I had a stage 1 exedy clutch and their lightweight flywheel. It chattered like a mother at times. Sometimes upping your idle in the tune can help. |

Holy crap, well thanks man I've been reading non stop ever since and it seems to be normal. I just hadn't heard the chatter or it hadn't chattered till now that I started to giving it a little more gas and by that I don't mean flooring it or hitting full boost, just a bit more gas and pushing the revs over 3.5k but damn it's depressing. I guess because race car but the thing is that Ive seen these fully prepped bad ass cars with crazy horse power levels and they don't chatter like a grands with dentures at idle. How come this cars different?

It has actually gotten better.. not sure why in the world did that one particular afternoon the chatter was sobad. I'm having the tuner turn the idle up a bit but the chatter is very minimum now and only with the AC on. Glad to know its not a problem though. It seems it was more noticeable when the radiator fans were running at full speed and the AC was on.. maybe something to do with load at idle. Like they say, "because race car".

Clutch Input
So from reading through this thread,
And exedy stage 1 will comfortably handle 220-250 wtq, as I'm ordering the sbd kit and plan to run that on e85 with a custom tune. |

Yes, mine had no problems until past 300wtq. How long it lasts at any of these levels, who knows.

Exedy Stage 1 ogranic clutch w/ chromoly flywheel
I am in the market to purchase a new clutch for my 2013 BRZ. As I was reading this thread, the majority of people have had rattling noise with their lightened flywheel with ACT.
I don't know if this is an ACT issue or all brands have this issue because I've only owned Exedy stage 1 with lightened flywheel on my 2002 RSX. Here is my take on Exedy: It's noticeably stiffer than stock, but not overly stiff where its uncomfortable (to me at least). It also had shorter engagement point which I personally liked. I had no issues with the flywheel in terms of rattling or any other noises, and no CEL codes. My idle wasn't exactly stable, it kind of fluttered slightly and would drop RPM's when turning on the AC. Also it was easier to stall, and like any lightened flywheel you have to give it a little more gas. besides those issues I loved the Exedy stage 1 paired with their Exedy chromoly flywheel. To answer someones questions on durability, I didn't really track it or autocross that much with it (it was my intention to do so), so most of it was daily driving and fun runs and it lasted as I expected around 30-35k miles (note: very little track involved) and probably could push it to 40k miles. Currently on my BRZ OEM clutch not tracked at all unless the previous owner did I am feeling the wear and tear at about 46k miles which seems to be about right mileage to change the clutch (currently at 49k miles OEM clutch). I was going to purchase the same setup, but shopped around and looking at ACT SB8-HDSS with their prolite flywheel kit and the price made it very appealing. After reading some reviews, rattling noises from ACT seems to be in issue which is making me hesitant now. Maybe its the weight of the flywheel, I don't know. Exedy Chromoly flywheel - 12.7lbs ACT Streetlite - 11.8lbs ACT Prolite 10.5lbs So there is significant difference in weight compared to the Exedy. Also I've heard from manufactures that the BRZ/FRS transmission is a bit temperamental so that could be a factor. If I go with ACT I will write a review another review and tell you my thought on it. |
