I've found no definitive answer, just that some known drivers were switching back to 245, and sidewall often comes up. In the case of the RE71 it's an inch of treadwidth over the 245 if TireRack's numbers are right.

255 is a lot of tire for sure, will have clearance though. Coilovers and 35 offset.

Thanks for the thoughts on the subject regardless. I still have a little time to ponder and wait for more data on the new tires.

Yup. Before my friend went to STX with his then stock BRZ, we borrowed another friend's 17x9 +42 PRF1 with 255 Z2s to test fit. The tire was going to rub.

I've run 255/40 RE11A on 17x9+35 for two seasons now. No rubbing on stock suspension nor coils after a drop and -2.4 front camber. The added tire height was great for an extra few MPH but with my raised rev limit I'm going to bump back down to 245 I think to lower my CG and tire weight. As some others have noted however, the RE11A is not as wide in that size as some of its competitors.

That RE71s width is tempting though..... Pretty large for a 255.

Most people just do what they see other do. I suspect though, that those in STX that made a cognitive choice to move from 255 to 245 was because of how the RS3 reacts to a 9" rim. Likewise, if you were to use the Toyo, the 235 has been proven on a 9" rim. I wouldn't say that its a general rule that 245 is the "faster" size.

Most people don't like complicated, but when sizing the "fastest tire" for a particular size rim tire construction and compound really need to be taken into account. What works for a RS3 may not work for a Dunlop, for example.

I was running 255/40/17 on stock suspension with 17X9 et +35 RPF-1 and 1 degree of negative camber added. I had no issues with rubbing the spring perch.

Had my first experience with the RE71R's and my first impressions are really really good. I'm going to do some alignment changes and suspension adjustments for next weekend as I had some slight under-steer while accelerating. I will be able to report some more in depth info when the time comes. All in all I grabbed the fastest raw time of the day ( the track was only 30 seconds long) on the RE71R's. Tires had great response/grip; the only complaint I have is the tires did require some warm up time (2 runs while temps were in the 70s) but should work perfectly during the summer. Tires even behaved really well for daily use, very comfortable.

That due to offset. Most nationally competive STX builds I see run 17x9 +45.
While +35 probably looks cooler, but making the car wider +10mm wider each side is counter productive. If you tried to fit 255 using a +45 rim, it would make contact with the stock spring perch.

A lot of the talk coming from California this weekend is that the RE-71R is quite the ringer if temps are warm enough - apparently an STS Civic raw-timed a few of the top STU cars. The talk is big and bold enough to make me ever so slightly regret pulling the trigger on some star specs...it'll be interesting to see how the Rival S stacks up.

I'm in NorCal and we had the Speedway CAM Challenge event over here. As a volunteer worker, we got to drive the course. A Nationals winning driver in a Nationals winning car was there and he was very very fast on them.

I'm not on the best of tires (300+ run RS3s) and I'm not at his level, but I was feeling pretty good compared about my times until I saw his runs. I've raw timed him in previous events but I got a thorough beating this time around.

Last Thursday I ordered RS3 V2s, they are still in route. By Sunday afternoon, I ordered a set of Bridgestones. Anyone want some unused 245/40/17 RS3 V2s?

I also got feedback from another trusted source on the East Coast. Just a local event, but he took #1 PAX over another National Champ. He hasn't done that before. I shouldn't hype them so close to the Tours (Go buy Hankooks and Dunlops!! ) but I think the RE71s are going to be the tire to have.

Well, given how the Toyos shook out, I'm not taking much stock in an STS civic being a good indicator of what tire would be good for our cars in the various setups.

*edit* I'm not saying it doesn't maybe have the potential to be "the one" this year, and I'm glad some of you are getting some to try out. I just feel that results from cars significantly different from our own shouldn't make me instantly regret buying RS3s.

At my event, it was a GS Focus ST. It was the 2014 winning car/driver. I've been fairly competitive in PAX and have raw timed him in previous events when we were all on RS3 V2s. My RS3 V2s have since been worn out (they are practice tires now) and his RE71Rs are fresh, but I got beat by over 1 second on a 55 second course.

The other reliable source was a CS RX8 outpaxxing a National Champ in a new WRX in DS on Z2SS. I was told the DS driver is looking for RE71Rs now.

Two different events.

Idk who you are, but I was at that event, know both of them well. I believe they have purchased the RE71R.

Only thing I saw at that event was that the tires fell off a bit with heat, his first 2 runs were his quickest. This was in FL with call it 85 degree heat on asphalt. Others have indicated different, so it will be interesting to see how that shakes out.
