Not necessarily dead weight if there's benefit to the cost. But I might lower my car and it'd be painful having hundreds of dollars of underbody panels get scraped/dented up by unforgiving dips/bumps in the road.
Hence, coroplast panels as Turbowned and I suggested

But, priority should be covering up suspension components on the bottom. I don't know how much the spoiler does, the angle of the rear windshield is like 18ish degrees or so which might cause some detached flow but hard to say.

lol wait, is this just a guess? I too am interested in some actual figures, although some benefits are self explanatory.

I think the reason under-body panels are not available for N.A bound vehicles is due cost savings to increase profit margins. There will be more FR-S/BRZ sold here than anywhere else in the World.

But i am not too worried... aftermarket/vendors will take care of this.

The BRZ Premium (no spoiler/no panels) is published at 0.29cd, BRZ Limited (yes spoiler/no panels) is published at 0.28cd. Hence, the spoiler makes a difference of 0.01cd.

The 86 is published at 0.27cd. All 86s come equipped with under panels. The spoiler makes a difference in the BRZ so you'd think Toyota's best published number includes all components which make a difference (wing+panels) so marketing can boast the best possible cd value.

So it's a deduction based on hard numbers, not a wild guess.

custom sheet metal panels would be ideal because then you could add louvers to helpo draw air out of the engine bay (bad heat) and also add louvers to help pick up cold air to deliver to the brakes and to the engine/tranny. Also you can add access points to make it easier to get to common bolts with out having to take off the entire shield.

That's funny some do that here just to butter someone up to take on a proposed project, but all that talk is after work of course.

And yeah, to bad. :happy0180:

I would 100% be interested in this upgrade once an aftermarket vendor comes out with an option or even buying from subaru from the JDM models.

I know the amount of drag with the panels is so minimal compared to the limited with the wing but I would imagine it would somewhat help the fuel consumption for highway use....am I wrong?

Interesting if the FR-S has these panels and the BRZ doesn't. The plastic parts can't cost that much. Overall, they would be the preferred material for noise alone. Some of those aluminum panels can make a bunch of noise with wind and then crap hitting them.
