Someone finally did it: https://www.facebook.com/86nannycontroller/timeline

Is it one of you?

It bugs me I can't remember what arduino variant he is using. It looks lilypad-ish with it's purple and huge solder pads.

That is an arduino Beetle.
I have two just sitting here staring me in the face taunting me to build one....

He did precisely what I suggested.

Yeah, that's it!

I wonder why the beetle. They are pretty darn cheap at $8. I was going to suggest the Trinket Pro ($9).

Just power the arduino with the power for the lights on the buttons.

Then when the Arduino boots, you just have to command two outputs to close (simulating the driver pushing the button) and hold for ~10 seconds then release.
If you want the switch to disable the feature, just wire it into the power to the arduino then it wont do anything when you start the car.

So its really just:

writeDigitalOutput10 = 1; Close Trac switch
writeDigitalOutput11 = 1; Close VC switch
Sleep 10000; wait 10 seconds
writeDigitalOutput10 = 0; Open Trac switch
writeDigitalOutput11 = 0; Open VC switch

And thats it!

The does the traction override, which is cool and all, but leaves some nannies on. What you really want, and what I believe this guy did was hit the CAN bus with the message that is sent when you do the "pedal dance."

His FB page talks about the CAN bus stuff, but the device he is showing only disables the TC/VSC the same as holding the buttons down.
Even with all the talk about a way to get the same results as the pedal dance using CAN, I wont believe it till I see it.

I could be wrong, but there are not enough components (or wires) for that device to interface with CAN.
Even the CAN interface shield for Arduino is $40 by itself so he could not sell a CAN version for $50 assembled.

Hmm. That's kind of lame then. I guess I should get to work (after I finish all the other little projects).

@mig86 thinks it is possible to do with a simple CAN msg.

Already there is a commercial product.
http://www.cocoa.ne.jp/archives/2190 (You may need to use Google translate service.)

As you can see the description of the product, it does not need to wait the water temperature.

Hey Guys!

I see my facebook page got a mention so I was going to open the door for any questions. Also... Interesting find on the Chinese product! I tried to do some quick digging but can't get many details on how the device functions. The price is insane though! I can assure you of all the methods you can use to automate a pedal dance, not a single one while using the most expensive components possible should amount near $500. While there are various ways you can achieve the goal of these devices, the difference I can comment on from visual comparison is mine will be far cheaper and will also have a pass-thru port so you can still use other OBDII devices.

Anyways. You guys can ignore the old "wiring required" method you see on the facebook page. I started making those as favors and it kinda blew up into a small streak of turning my kitchen into an assembly line. I used what I made in profit off those to invest into completely understanding the electronic modules in these cars for my end goal of creating various devices that will be able to simulate or automate tasks. I'm into racing so the obvious first step was the pedal dance.

Yesterday the first prototype got 4 hours of track time at Barber Motorsports Park and I'm also shipping a few to various racers in the US starting next week to make sure QA is well covered. I'll be happy to answer any questions and always open for input as well!

$342. Not too bad.
If someone were to buy one, we could capture the OBD transaction and figure out how it works.

So does yours get the same results as the pedal dance?
Or is it just the same as the VSC/TC buttons.

Convince me that it works by explaining it just a bit.

I see the bare minimum that it would take to build one (assuming all interfaces are on the ODBII connector):
Arduino - $35
OBD Shield - $50
OBD passthru cable - $25
Case and associated hardware - $10

So total in hardware costs = $125

UNLESS it can work from a Droid phone and an ELM327, then it is just $10.

Right now I'm in the testing phase making sure functionality and safety are 100% perfect. Tomorrow a few prototypes start shipping around to US to a few racers to help with the testing. Once I'm certain we have a perfectly working product on hand, I'm going to work on getting the units built for as cheap as possible. I can for sure tell you that it will be nowhere close to the cost of the Chinese unit someone found.
