The problem isn't that they're trying to get in front of you... that's just how traffic works, people are expected to cooperate to get to their respective destinations while keeping things flowing as smoothly as possible.

However, all this breaks down when people start acting inconsiderate and egocentric... the same rules don't apply when someone just shoves in front of you when they CLEARLY should have just waited an extra couple seconds for you to pass first (i.e., they don't intend to match your speed or get out of your safety zone once in front), because now, they've just put a hazard in front of you and if you don't brake hard, you ram into their ass.

Essentially, they've just put a "fuck you, brake or die" scenario in front of you which should not be something that you just "have to deal with" as part of a daily commute. It's a straight up disregard for your life, and deserves to be reacted to as such.

You don't see people cutting in line at Starbucks because the guy in front is taking too long to fill the gap ahead, do you? It's easy to do that in the safety of your car, where you can just lock yourself in and speed away from further confrontation.

Just to be nice I always let the other person merge unless I'm in a rush. With all the traffic around town I know how it feels to struggle to merge sometimes so I just let them go just to be nice

I'll always let someone who signals make the change- reinforce good driving habits. Only one person gets in on merges. The rest depends on traffic. I'm a total bastard when traffic is heavy (beltway in rush hour, etc), otherwise I don't think it's worth getting worked up.

I did that one time.

Traveling up a fairly empty I-81 with my wife at about 80 click through WV I wanted to pass an up coming car in the right lane. I had a trailing car in the left lane about 5 car lengths back mirroring my speed. As soon as I put on the left blinker the left-laner accelerated to block me from exiting the lane I was in. There was plenty of time and space up ahead to the slow car so I continued to merge over right. The follower was never going to be able to make up the difference before I was fully over into the fast lane.

Instead of getting a honk or high beams flashed the driver proceeded stay inches from my rear bumper. Once we cleared the slower car the follower jumped in to the right lane and sped up to come along side of me. When he had the opportunity he came over and started door banging - to the horror of my wife.

I learned a lesson. If a guy is such a douche as to not want to let you in, be patient and let him pass. Why try and aggravate a fcktard. If he doesn't have the sense to share the road then he might not have any sense at all.

That one is nothing! The others would get me banned for sure.

"Door banging" you know where they freak out and slap the door and throw their hands around. Usualy a finger involved somewhere in the process as well.

My thoughts exactly. Followed by; "who leans out the window at 60+ mph and bangs on a neighboring car window? Crazy people thats who"

Let me represent what goes through my mind when a situation occurs:
I will let someone over 100% of the time if their turn signal is on and they give ample time for me to recognize it and not just dart over in my lane, I will let them over. (It's called a turn SIGNAL not a turn WARNING right?)

Those people who think they can sneak in my lane when I clearly can tell they want to get over, but don't have the common sense to use a turn signal, yeah I'll speed up. Learn to drive and have some respect for others.
I was thinking about starting a petition to have everyone over 21 and every 2-3 years go take the driving test again, I bet half our country would be forced to ride bikes and thus would cut down on obesity, less accidents, etc. Save the driving to those who actually know how.
/rant

tldr; If you don't have your turn signal on, I'm not letting you over, it takes less than .052 seconds and can actually save lives. Weird how nobody uses them anymore..don't get me started on tap-turn..
