Are you "that guy"?
On my way to dinner today, I experienced something I'm sure you've all experienced before.
I'm in the slow lane, and approaching a slower car in front - so I signal left to enter the passing lane. Wouldn't you know it - the car in the passing lane which was behind me suddenly accelerates to try and block me off (it had been about 2 car lengths behind me and travelling at a slower speed). I still had room, so I moved into the passing lane anyway (earning an angry honk, high beams, and a tailgating driver for the next 2 km). I gave the guy a thumbs up, flashed a peace sign, and waved good bye when he turned left. Just wondering - I know some people do this unconsciously (my Dad swears he isn't speeding up when he someone trying to pass, but we all call him out on it). What about the rest of ft86club? Are there acceptable situations to block someone trying to pass? I can only think of situations where there really ISN'T enough room to pass - depending on the other driver, I might slow down and let them in. However, if I had previously noticed the driver strafing in and out of lanes, cutting others off, etc., I might not be as charitable. Any guidelines? Any patterns (i.e. certain marques or types of cars which are more likely to do this)? |

I forget where I saw it but it's natural for a person to unconsciously speed up when someone is trying to pass them. Cause people are assholes

I will do it when I think it would be difficult to slow down to make it safe to let them in like if some other car is all up on my rear end or if the person is likely to drive slow as hell with no intention of actually passing the other car and then getting out of my way. Otherwise I'm happy to let someone in.
People who try to get that last space on a dissapearing lane by running all the way to the front and diving in, oh yeah, no way are you making it, son. To keep them from even getting next to me to try to muscle in I will actually swerve into their lane to shut them down and establish dominance immediately. |

Sometimes I'm as asshole but only when they are changing lanes like idiots and not using their signals. If a signal is used I always let them in.

I think there are a lot of potential ways this plays out. Often times when there are a lot of cars on a commute, I keep people from doing that since I am leaving the space there for my safety and if a guy is driving like a **** just to be four feet further in the traffic than otherwise, I block him. I am also a **** if he is the guy who keeps cutting people off causing brake lights but miraculously keeps ending up behind people driving normally. If a person is simply trying to get ahead and it is open, I let them have it.

I think if there's no benefit to me (i.e. I'm stuck in traffic and people are trying to merge), I'll let them in. Especially at intersections, I'll try to leave a gap if I see someone trying to turn or something like that.
But yeah - last minute mergers, no dice. |

I have kind of the same situation happen to me on my way to my friends house. It's 25 mph speed limit, and I'm sitting at the T intersection. I look left and right, like a good driver. I see a lady in her Toyota driving down from the left, about 150 feet away, obviously doing the speed limit (she was going very slow) I had probably atleast a minute before she got to the intersection
So I went. I ended up getting high beamed, a finger and she layed on the horn like I had just brake checked her. lol some people are just scared of driving. (She wasn't old, she was middle aged).

I don't do it, but your average numbskull will do it because they can't fathom the idea of "letting" someone in front of them if they can help it.
Doesn't matter if they're holding up the lane, or if you're just gonna zoom off and leave 'em in the dust anyway. They are entitled to putt along at their own leisurely pace, and they own exclusive rights to the entire lane in front of them.

Not to be "that guy" but did you actually accelerate into the passing lane, or did you just come over?
Here's my rules: - Use the $%@#@ turn signal - If I have to hit my brakes, you're an asshole and shouldn't have pulled out. - The space between cars for a safe distance is NOT room for you to pull into. |

Like said so many times already though the asshats that don't merge at construction or such and then try to force their way in at the very end can wait or be prepared to pay the insurance costs of pushing me out of their way!

If I see some tool coming up at a unreasonable speed I have been known to Chinese Roadblock them for a couple km.
Otherwise I don't really give a shit, I am always in the right lane. |

Additionally, I will block your ass if you try to merge in front of me when there's more than adequate room behind me.
