bummer, sorry to hear about this. The 2zz is pretty much a direct bolt in as far as I recall and they do make parts for it. You can get one out of a wrecked Lotus Elise (190 HP) or Celica GT-S (180 HP). externally the same engine, mostly the same internally too. Had an MR-S myself, Awesome little car but lacks power.

Alright, 2zz it is then, tentatively. TVS is too much work to put in though, the engine bay is super cramped.

Monkey Wrench Racing makes a turbo kit for it too.

buy a IS300 or 350Z to commute first and figure out what you want to do , it is comfortable and already depreciated to the buttom

Again, no 2GR, that's just excessive and getting a proper transmission is too hard.

I'm gonna get rid of this car first and then if I'm not going to a big city with no parking when I graduate, I'll get a slightly fresher MR-S and do the 2ZZ swap. Or I might be lazy and just buy a BRZ. An NA 2ZZ can make 200hp with a tune, that's honestly way more than enough.

If gas consumption is an issue, the IS300 is automatically DQ'd.
Awesome car, fantastic with the 5-spd, but horrid gas mileage.

Drooling over the prospect of a 2zz-ge swapped MR-S...

Just another thought,

A huge reason why I'm still keeping the sw20 around is because it's literally peanuts to insure. I've got classic car insurance on it with Hagerty/Lant and my premium is so low that what some people pay in a month is nearly what I pay in a year for the policy. So what I'm trying to say is, if you can find something clean and classic, it's worth it. But on the flip side, you'll need two cars to have classic car insurance. One car showing as used as a DD and your classic car. Plus, 10 years of driving experience (pretty much be over 25) and not too many tickets will meet the qualifications.

But as an all arounder vehicle to be used as a DD, you really can't beat the frs/brz. The next closest thing would be one of the 240sx w/ sr turbo variants. But will be near impossible to find one that hasn't been played in. I was thinking E46 M3, but how prepared are you to pony up for the maintenance of the bimmer? Plus it'll be like 18mpg on premium and that adds up. Insurance is comparatively higher as well.

Just get an frs/brz and be done with it. 2+2, just enough cargo, peppy enough, 25mpg combined, cheap to insure ($120/month for me) and built to handle. All that fit my lifestyle exactly this is why I have my FRS for a DD.

^^ that's what I'm thinking right now. I still need to test drive one to see how much I like it obviously, but it seems appealing. I am a little bit concerned about power because my MR2 wasn't very fast but its midrange punch is probably better than the 86 even with mods simply due to having more displacement per pound. The 86's engine makes more specific torque but also has to lug around 30% more mass, and it seems like it would only outshine the MR2 above 5000rpm. Which is fine, but the 1ZZ's low end is not impressive at all and the 86 is probably even worse.

That said, a really light flywheel and some other small mods is probably enough to liven it up a little. Seems like the tuning options are a bit better too, since you can crack the stock ECU and it has a wideband O2 sensor.

I like the E46 M3 a lot, and I'm not that worried about gas mileage for that car as it's not totally unreasonable, but I started reading about the maintenance and got scared away...chassis problems, required valve adjustments, clutch driven fan (WTF? who the hell thought this was a good idea?), and that doesn't get to electronics issues.

I'm also pretty fond of the Porsche 996 but the M96 engines are known to blow up well before 200k, even if you take good care of them, and design-wise they're even more of a dinosaur than the 1ZZ. The jump to a 9A1 powered car is pretty big as 2009+ Porsches go for mid 30s and up :/ You have to get a 981/991 to avoid the power steering pump exploding issue too.

Have you noticed the bottom of this car picks up rust like crazy (especially with the salt/slush on our roads)? I wonder about the longevity of this car... that's my only concern

Oh hell yea! I feel like i bought a damn Mazda in terms of quality of materials. Like yourself, I'm also worrying about rust issues with my FRS. I rust proof the car yearly and even purchased a rust protection package with the vehicle but the under cariage and parts of the engine bay are already showing signs of rusting. I swear, sometimes I feel like the FRS is a frikken cheap POS. I really wished I had another car for winter duties but there's no way on God's green earth the wife will let me have 3 cars with two being parked 6 months out of the year. Would be pretty wasteful unless I was making a six figure income at which point I would just sell everything and get myself a gen2 Dodge Viper GTS.

I hate wearing face masks when I work, but I've started doing so when I'm under the BRZ. Not loving the taste of road salt.
