Finally stopped by Subaru to pick up the slave cylinder. Now I just need to find the time to do it.

Not yet.
Have to pick up a truck and get a couch from IKEA today.
Want to get it done before I go back to work on Wednesday though.

Reading this thread explains so much about my issues with shifting gears, in both this car and my impreza which has a similarly long engagement point. Like many others i've been driving stick for years and never needed more than half an hour to get used to a clutch - until I got in a subaru.
i first discovered this thread a few months ago, and just realizing what the problem was has helped my shifting become so much smoother. Haven't done the mod yet as my garage is way too cold - will be first thing I do when a warm spring day comes around. If the results are as good as i'm expecting in the brz, I'll be investigating whether a similar part is available from a non-turbo impreza as a shorter clutch throw in that would be welcome too.

Right? Once I knew what it was, I purposely tried to work with it. Problem is I had to keep thinking about it. Never became second nature.

What diameter is the slave cylinder on your impreza?

Not sure about the impreza - it is an sti, so i'm wondering if it is a larger diameter one, and the non-turbo variants have the smaller diameter - just like the forester slave cylinders we're using for the brz I believe. Certainly the feel of the clutch travel is longer than other cars i've driven, just like the brz.

When I first got the impreza it took me ages to get smooth with it, and I still am not really as smooth as I am in most other cars after a very short familiarization period. A few posts dotted about the net with similar issues by experienced drivers moving to the sti. I never even considered the clutch travel.

I don't think anyone has. If this is par for Subaru then their approach to the design is seriously flawed. Priorities are all out of whack. For any mechanical engineer worth h(is/er) salt, this is day-1 shit.

subarus are king for shitty ass transmission and driveline feel...

I have had the displeasure of replacing my WRX 5mt TWICE. Once with another stocker, and one (currently) RA gearset when second gear grenaded on the stocker again.

Oh and I bought a kartboy short shifter because the shifts were so sloppy and long, only to find out the previous owner already put the sti short shofter kit in, to spec. It's not the install, it's the design that's messed up

Honestly, I can't get over all the time and effort they put into the "feel" for this machine and nobody bitched about the clutch? I'd like to meet the responsibles just so I could wag my finger and shame them.

Next on my list are engine mounts and such to get rid of the first gear boinga-boinga-boinga... It's a sports car FFS! Talk about grenading stuff, the wheel hop scares the shit out of me.
