That's not it, 1zzs are not internal EGR, another myth spread by ignorant people. What does happen is oil ring failure, massive oil consumption, and then boom when it goes dry.

I think the previous owner ran the oil too low and the bearings got damaged and eventually the rod let go.

Okay so actually it looks like I'm probably gonna get a real job after graduation and so the budget can now probably accomodate an FRS or WRX (new one of course, I feel like getting an EJ powered car is asking for trouble).

I guess the question I'm trying to answer for myself is how practical do I want my next car to be...I considered a Lexus IS250 manual (hard to find) as a nice low key practical car that could still be kind of fun and reliable, but I don't really see the back seats being used much so maybe vestigal or non-existent back seats are still a good idea.

2014 is250? If it's the years before with the 4grfe and being direct injection only, I would run away. The is350 with the 2grfse is the one to get. Still though, how much of a driver's car do you want? The Is250/350 is numb and floaty. Coming from an mrspyder, there's no doubt the FRS/brz is fitting for you. I mean, you're active here on this forum. Seems as though it's time for you to get off the sidelines and actually get the car. Get the brz though. The FRS is the cheap ass POS version. Unless it's a monogram or whatever limited version go for the brz. I still wish I would've gotten a brz instead. Mainly for the headlights. But it really is the better value of the two, IMO.

If you can swing two cars, the other option would be to grab a clean ~$15k JDM sports car and a regular 4dr car as a DD. S2000 and 350z come to mind with a Toyota Matrix for people hauling and grocery getting duties.

imo if practicality is a concern at all there are a bunch of hot hatches available and at a few years old they can all slide in under $20k a veritable bargain: Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Abarth, Mini, GTI, Mazdaspeed 3.

2014 IS is still using the 4GR-FSE. They haven't updated the engines. Yea it's a soft and floaty car, probably not what I'm looking for. Technically if I really wanted I could swing two cars but parking them and taking care of two cars isn't really worth it.

Remember, I'm coming from an MR2 Spyder. The FRS/BRZ is like a minivan to me.

The answer is still 2GR, Serial.

Now you don't have the cost excuse. Buy a used commuter and swap and hardtop the Spyder.

This is probably the best route to take and you won't have car payments too. Although, I'd go for the 2zz as it's less hassle of a swap and light.

Then why consider WRX or Lexus at all? By all counts those things are pigs compared to the Toyobaru, let alone the 2,500 lb hatchbacks that make even the 86 feel lazy in places.

Nah, I'd do a 2AR or 2ZZ or K20 before a 2GR. Fuel consumption is bad, hard to find 6 speed transmissions (the standard E153 is a terrible choice of transmission for the 2GR), and the chassis needs cutting to fit it (big no no, not dealing with that). Plus 2GR is kind of truck-engine-like, needs modifications to make it more exciting. Actually with unlimited budget I'd choose a K20, because it's reliable, high revving, and has a reliable transmission unlike the C60. Actually I don't really know what I'd do, this is still something I'm thinking about.

Considering the Lexus because they're kind of old and you can grab a used one at steep discount. WRX, well, for some strange reason I really like the new one, and it's actually fast unlike the BRZ, which is nice.

Oh I forgot, absolutely no FWD. If I were into that I'd buy a Civic Si anyday.

The 2015 WRX is a seriously awesome car. It can do everything pretty well.

If you had the space/money, keeping the MR-S and swapping the 2ZZ would be tempting. My brother's is a lot of fun, but it's much too impractical to be an only car.

Marginally off topic, but some guy's made a thread looking for you, asking about MR2 swap stuff.

Weird way to go about it.

Anyways...

Serial, the forum has spoken. 2ZZ and a daily.

TVS that bitch, too.
