I have now had 4 what I thought at the time were "Come race me" experiences where I actually met the other person after the event (the one crash is included on this thread someplace back in the past).
Every single one of them said they either just wanted to hear my exhaust or were jockeying to get a better look at the car. None were looking to race.
I have to wonder just how many other "they tried to race me" stories were exactly the same scenario.
Mind you I have had more then my share that were certainly trying to entice me to race as well!

Had a few come race me bro experiences one was last week a guy in a lifted truck came flying behind me on the highway while I was in the slow lane so I moved over to the fast lane and sped up a bit. I guess he took this as a challenge so he dropped a gear and continually sped up and slow down for like 2 minutes trying to get me to race him. Finally he realized he was not worth my time and sped off lol

At red light, double left hand turn lane. Newer porsche carrera to the left of me about 1/2 car length behind(he's checking out my car). Road is slightly down hill maybe 2% so light turns green and I granny shift 1st to 5th in like 8-10 seconds. He pulls next to me gives me look and downshifts into second, his car lurches(no rev match), redlines and then he grinds into third, and van pulls in front of him he locks it up and abs kicks in and smoke comes out of one of his tires, almost rear ending the van in front of him. I pass him while hysterically laughing and he flips me off.

I have a lot of weird stories about Mustangs from the current and last gen trying to race me. They're always the ones to start something and rarely do I take the bait. It's just funny to watch them get mad when I let them do their thing. My car is for corners and drifting, I'm not interested in straightaways and never will be.

It's always the same, mind you. Most of these usually start with some douche-bro looking at my car up and down and glaring when I make eye contact. They'll either rev high a couple of time or just blast their music until I fear for their skull's structural integrity. Light turns green, they mash the gas, and either try to cut me off as I cruise or attempt to put as much distance between me as them as they can while redlining their asses off. More than once I've watched some struggle to drive in a straight line. They're like walking, talking, driving memes.

On the rare instance I say "Fuck it" I ALWAYS pass them in the turns or just pseudo-race and turn off at where I wanted. I'm never aiming to actually pass them, just wanting to make them mad. Lol if I really wanted to race it probably wouldn't be against overly eager Mustang drivers. I have more fun driving against non-American cars since the drivers are almost always much more relaxed....unless they're fart can Hondas...

Admittedly I have a lot of SUV's always trying to race me for some reason. 7/10 times the driver yells out their window at me and either calls my car trash or just cusses me out for looking at them and rolling up my window. I never take the bait on these, they're just so trashy. It's even funnier when it's women with the drug-addled-skin look who do it.

Let's face it guys we have a dumb ass look car who deceived most of the onlookers in the street. We are on the stigma within ourselves that this car can't compete in a 1/4mile run stop light compare with those heavy muscles, and faster luxury sedans in the road even with a tune civic unless you modified it and tuned your car to unlock its full potential.I've got the new RS1 '15 and I can relate on your sentiments here but in the end of the day I always put smile on my face and think they might have the power to boost up in front of me but I've always got the looks that will envy every driver in the road ;D . every time people ask me whenever I'm having road trip if the car is fast I always replied yeah it is!though not on a straight line but in every corners and cross road you can imagine. and they just simply ask me again its like fast and furious??? and I put a smile on my face hell yeah!!and I can imagine them picturing my yellow dragon doing drift driving inside their head .

How do you know it was modded?
all the mods in the world won't make you a better driver anyway.

bare with me on this till the end
-exhaust
-splitter and diffuser
-wing, not quite rocket bunny sized but it did actually look functional and not ricey
-lowered not slammed or stanced
-wider tires and off course wheels, those popular enkei's everyone uses for tracking, you know which ones im talking about
-decals...i know i know
-the only time i see it is outside an autoshop, a quater mile from the light i saw it at, with other obviously not stock vehicles

and yes he still could've been a bad driver too

So they may have all the looks but not the umph that goes with it.
Or even one of those guys that think you shift at 3000 not at 7200.
Looking fast, being fast and driving fast are not all givens. I have seen some very fast cars driven very poorly (don't even get me started about 'Vette drivers around here) and I have seen some supposedly "slow" cars driven very well.
I wasn't there though so I will have to bow to your observations.

After seeing a lot of the G35 owners nowadays now that they can be had for really cheap, I apologize to all of you who are the subject of their nonsense.

from the Sh*t 86 owners say-
"everyone wants to race me"
SEVEN encounters in the span of ~20 minutes.
1. So I get off work, approaching a red light, truck going the opposite way. Guy screams out "RACE ME BRO!"
2. I reach that light and prepare to make a left turn. I make the left behind a car in front of me into the right lane, is350 cuts on the inside of me and floors it, only to slam his brakes 100ft later and his front wheels are in the intersection.
3. At the light I am making a right to enter the freeway, I enter and its a two lane entrance that becomes one, I am ahead of an altima(with black steelies and purple lights), I get a jump(I always enter semi-aggressive to relieve some work tension). He tries to go in the other lane to pass me but is unsuccessful. So the very next exit less than 20 seconds away is merging onto another freeway, I see red lights so I let off, he changes lanes to the left on a two lane highway only to slam on his brakes.
4. As we are slowing down I pass the altima and in front of him is a newer retro mustang lowered and blue lights and I get ahead of him. I see him weaving between lanes to catch up to me. He gets next to me and floors it(v8/exhaust/auto), only to brake. I pass him soon after.
5. 5 minutes pass and another freeway merges onto the one I am on, so there is slow 10mph traffic, a jetta is to my right and I am in his blind spot so he starts turning into my lane AT me and he twitches back into his own lane to floor it and get stuck behind a semi. About at minute passes and we get back to speed and I see him, he is on the passing lane and everyone else is too, he is stuck behind a prius, I see him change lanes to try to catch up, but a suv cuts him off.
6. About 10 minutes later traffic frees up and a old boxter is on my ass(I cant see his headlights) for no reason and I tap my brake to let him know to back off, he changes lanes to pass, only to get stuck behind another car(look ahead bro!!). I see him tailgate a bunch of other cars and change lanes multiple times, I stay in my lane and he ends up getting trapped between cars and I pass him. He tries to catch up wasting a bunch of gas only to slam on his brakes. He exits soon after he gets stuck behind a semi.
7. So traffic bunches up again, a porsche gt3 is two lanes to the right of me entering, I pass him for a bit. He catches up in traffic and floors it next to me only to slam on his brakes. Sounded good. Nice fixed wing. Nice and low.

Why does everyone want to race me?

I would recommend staying off the freeway next time. People might die. Just a heads up. Great story though!

@swarb: I think it's less about people wanting to race you than it is that people in LA are jerks.
