Radioshack...

I'm sure most of you have seen on the news, Radioshack is filing for bankruptcy, selling some stores to other companies to own. But, as we know, they'll be gone for sure in a coupe of years...
http://www.foxbusiness.com/technolog...11-bankruptcy/

This is very saddening, why?
Where the fuck can one get local electronic components? Local stores? Haven't existed in over five years.
Specialized audio components and cables? Best Buy? Ha!

Instead of getting in the car, going out and buying one simple IC Chip or resistor, now I'll have to order online and wait.

I honestly can't think of how many projects I've made that were saved by radioshack.

I'm seriously sad that it has have come to this. Sure, some of their stuff was pure crap and overpriced, but they turned a lot of kids like me into potential engineering and technical types. Those stupid electronic kits they sold that only worked half the time? Yeah, i liked those...

RIP

They really needed to push more towards what they were great at before, hobby level things. I feel they tried too hard to sell stuff like cell phones and cell phone plans, etc. and just needed to focus on their old niche. That said, a lot of people in that niche are just ordering everything online now...

I will miss radioshack for the same reason dem00n said. I could grab stuff like t-taps, heat wrap, terminals, etc. real quick for exactly what I needed.

I remember going into Radio Shack with my dad and a box full of vacuum tubes from the TV.
We would test them all and replace the ones that were bad.
They had all of the vacuum tubes in stock.

( cue the - "What the hell is a Vacuum Tube" crowd )

Yes, its sad, but not surprising. If I have to explain to an employee what a capacitor is, and walk around the store with him to find it, after I've made the effort to go to the store, then its not worth my $. Places like mouser or digikey have cheap enough components and overnight shipping that I wouldn't mind waiting.

I miss the radio shack I used to go to with my dad, the one who actually had people who knew what they were doing. If last year's super bowl commercial said, "the 80's called and they want their store back" well, I want my 80's radio shack back!

I remember when the back 1/3 of the store was just racks of parts and pieces. Last time I went in looking for a part, they had a small cabinet, in an out of the way corner.

It has long been a cell phone store with crappy electronics on the shelves. I've been in them three times in the last three years, and that probably makes me one of their best customers. Frys has a much better selection of parts, if you actually need that.

Long time coming. I'm sure they may have saved you in a project, But how many times was that? and how much did you spend? 5-10bucks 2-3 times a year? Not exactly profitable.
Good memories. RIP

Honestly? Over 100 times. Spend? Maybe $2-3? 20 times a year? I used to ride my bike in various weather conditions to pick up the capacitor that i keep burning out back in my audio equipment days. Switches, wires, relays. The bunch!

The stores near me had positive gross revenue (most of the time), but the other ones near less populated areas did horrible.

Now that I am in a city that has one, I use Fry's all the time. But growing up, Radioshack was pretty much the only local choice for a lot of these kinds of things.

Through a stream of luck and contacts, seems i found a local place near me that specializes in electrical components and such.

Well, you could say a 30 minute drive is local...

For any of you in the Long Island area...
