I bought an RSX new. Had 2 miles on the odometer. Dealer said no one had test-driven it, and they were literally pulling the wrap off the wheels and doing a quick PDI before giving me the car.

Also bought a GTI new. Had 55 miles on it. Obviously it had been test-driven a couple of times and stored at a satellite lot.

Both cars were fine. I wouldn't worry about it much.

Correct. If you think you're the cars virgin experience, you're wrong. Tens of people have already sat in your seat [albeit plastic-covered] and driven the car prior to you buying it. Factory workers, transport workers, dealership PDI shake-down, and finally you.

10 miles is typical for most new cars, more for Germans, less for American. The biggest pre-delivery mileage I can think of however is the Bugatti Veyron. The factory shakes-down the car for 300 miles before signing off and allowing the customer to take delivery. As a result, the car is fully broken-in and ready for anything the instant the customer gets it. Ferrari et al have similar situations where the engine is fully broken-in on an engine dyno before being installed in the car so it's ready to go. The engines in most lowly mass-production cars [i.e. our FA20] are at least partially run, as in oil and coolant are pumped through and they're spun w/out firing to ensure they at least rotate and make pump air.

Long story short, don't sweat it and be thankful your car has had a decent shake-down before you get it.

I'm surprised that a few people here seem to think that some asshole can't cause damage to a car in a mile or two.

And I still don't think that the factory testing and the transportation of these cars from japan to the united states would cause them to accumulate more than a couple miles.

I guess the BRZ must go through some sort of "Magical Multiple Mile PDI Shakedown Test Drive" that an STi doesn't.

I will take into account that some dealerships nearest gas station is miles away. Now, that I think about it I watched my STi at the gas station being filled up....their nearest gas station was across the street.......and I was watching them from the dealership window like a f'ing hawk!!

But I'm still curious to see what kinda miles people eventually start to get when the car isn't the "new hotness" on the lot. Perhaps unusually long or multiple PDI's just for the heck of it are the culprit.

I will accept that my car will have anywhere from 6-10 miles on it.

But there will be hell to pay if my car has more than 10 miles on it!!!!!

Thanks for the input.

A typical dealership PDI drive for any car is 10-12 miles. I would be more suspicious if it was less, in that I'd wonder if they even drove it enough to call it "all systems go".

I used to be a branch manager for Enterprise rent a car and would get brand new cars in all the time; every car would get delivered with 6 or 7 miles on them. I think the lowest I ever saw was maybe 5.

LOL 10-12 miles! What the hell for? I will have a warranty for anything that is wrong with the car? Do they need to ensure that it doesn't suddenly explode at the 10th mile? I could understand a quick drive around the block to ensure something isn't majorly wrong, but a dealership taking it on a 10-12 mile joyride is ridiculous!!.....especially when it is a car that was preordered with a deposit. Why would I need and "ALL System Go" from some stranger....even if he was a tech?

Wow! Few deep breaths needed here. Have you ever bought a new car before?

It's standard procedure. If the PDI and 10-12 miles on the clock when you receive it is going to set you off, good luck actually using the car and having to deal with roads and parking lots of people who don't give a toss about your car and whether they put a ding in the door or not.

BTW, welcome to the forum

Meh. My GTI had a little over 200 when I got it. That was to be expected though, as it was driven here from another dealership.

I'll be the one who says "yes".

It depends on where you live though. Since I live in Houston which is a major port for cars coming in, the small driving onto and off trucks puts little to no mileage on the cars around here.

An average of 5 is what I always look for and find easily. Anything more means it was test driven either by customers, the dealership, or joyrides by the port crew(in my area that is).
.
.
.
edit: for all those who think nothing of the difference between 5 and 10 miles I have this to add: you have any idea how much wear and tear I can do to a vehicle in ONE mile? I can destroy an engine without moving the car 1 inch.

Did you even read my original post?

I bought a brand new 07 Sti Limited off the Showroom floor #031 of 800, it had 4 miles on it. I drove it off the lot with 4 miles on it. And I had it for 2 years before I sold it, with not a damn scratch or door ding on it. There are very easy precautions to take to ensure your car doesn't get door dinged.

here are some pics of my old car.

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/cars-sal...mited-ugm.html

the bottom pics are of my "2 year" old car before I sold it....as it was what I considered "dirty".
