Every time I'm at a stop sign, and someone approaches from the other side well after I have been stopped, I just assume that they have no idea how stop signs work (which it seems most people don't).

Just last week I was waiting to cross straight over a one way road with heavy traffic heading down the road. I was stopped for a good 25 seconds waiting with no one across from me when a van on the other side finally drove up to the stop sign across from me and wanted to turn left.

I figured by the way he was looking at the oncoming traffic and not me that he didn't so much as consider that I had right away. After the traffic passed and I started the cross , sure enough the guy jerks out right in front of me to make his left turn - would have been a t-bone accident had I not anticipated that, and been a defensive driver in that situation.

I'm not sure if you're referring to being stopped as you just said it was your turn to go, but still a related anecdote.

It really sucks that indeed so many people are just awful at obeying, and reading the signage and are permitted to have a license - I feel you on that one, but sadly as the better driver you need to just assume, predict, and count on these situations coming up.

It's just sort of naive, and sad for two cars that are are starting from a complete stop to end up hitting each other. Even when I know that I have right of way I proceed slowly initially, and look right at anyone that could potentially cross my path to help communicate that I'm proceeding.

The silver lining here is that it sounds like you know that you had right of way - and you can try to argue that the other driver was texting to boot, so hopefully her insurance will cover all of it, and your car will get fixed up.

^ Totally agreed. I always do this when coming to an intersection with stop signs. Saved my ass many times.

I actually aim at jack-asses that turn in front of me when it's not their turn, or when I have a green light and they're turning left in front of me after the arrow turning red. I don't hit them, but often scare the ever-loving crap out of them, which is my point.

As a tourist, I've driven thousands of miles in the US in rentals and these intersections have always bewildered me. I've read the rules, and concluded that they do not apply in real life. Instead, it seems that the person who is angriest or least afraid of crashing (usually the largest and/or oldest car) goes first.
We don't have those intersections in Europe. We have roundabouts. There are rules there too, and they don't apply in real life either. The most effective way to traverse an european roundabout is to look as you are oblivious of your surroundings and just plow straight into it. Toilet style.

We are getting more roundabouts all the time here.
And if you think people are confused by 4way stops well...

Courtesy is dangerous. My offensive-defensive driving technique has not failed me yet.
