If he's able to import a JZX100 Chaser, I'd do that in a second. Favorite car. Gobs of power, sporty sedan, plenty of room, looks incredible.
Funny you mention that, because it happened a fair bit with the JDM importation rush here. A lot of morons just imported 'Skylines' and 'Twin Turbo Supras', ended up with gutless RB20 Skylines and gutless 1GGTE Mk3 Supras.

However guys that knew what too look for did great. Met a guy at the track that had imported a Nismo-tuned R32 that ran high 11s for under $12k. Sounded like the 400R, but he said it wasn't exactly one. It was a GTR taken to Nismo and modded to 400R spec, but not an official 400R. Super clean and fast car.

Those deals are ultra rare, though.

In Canada we get 15 years which is nice.

R34 4 door (don't know the engine):

I absolutely loved my Chaser when I was in Japan. I'd love to import one when they're legal in 2021, but who knows how jaded I will be when the time comes.

The fast and furious tax is hitting hard. I see these young military guys spending way to much for rusty, worn out 89' GT-Rs. All of them rolling around with a smug look like they are the only one who figured it out. The hobby shop is littered with Rs with blown motors now, all supposedly getting fixed. There's eight or more down there now. My 94' was real world price.

People have no idea how much money goes into maintaining a GTR, and buying a 89 is the worst idea ever! Too overpriced and limitted choice so in the end your ending up with a expensive rust bucket. Unless you find a rare gem with full history and full tune to fix the notorious RB26 oil problems, but in that case prepare your 2.500.000 yen plus import charges.

If you want a reliable daily driver, then skip Nissan and go straight to Toyota. Supra's are too rare and expensive these days so best bet is a JZX100 that hadn't been drifted to sh*t!!!

I'd skip the GT-R and pick up a Chaser.

I don't mind RHD. I'm a month into driving a RHD WRX. Some lane changing just requires more caution and taking your time. Some left turns can be brutal but again take time, don't be afraid to piss off people in behind.

I went Subaru because they seem to be the most common, big local community in western Canada (WSC), support, parts etc. Mine is pretty mint, everything is new on it, 112k km's, new winter tires, etc. No piston slap. Last driven in Japan in 2012 so didn't sit around for long before being imported.

I've had the chance to sit in and briefly drive some dream cars thanks to my job. Top 5 off the top of my head:

JDM Integra Type R
WRX STI Type R
R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec (eat off the valve covers clean, 65xxx km's)
MKIV Supra TT (eat off valve covers clean, 70xxx km's)
FD RX7 13B TT - loud as all hell, sounded like it had street port, etc.

I wish someone would import a RHD NSX.
