Yeah - I will only fill up my car at the Costco gas station as they (generally) seem to be more respectful of your vehicle, and all speak English so I don't need to guess and hope that they understand what I'm asking them for.
That being said - does anyone know how bad is it/what are the effects of not putting premium in? I just picked up my car from the dealership after it was being serviced for a few days and it felt really heavy, or as if it was having a hard time accelerating etc. I don't know how other to describe it than "chugging". I noticed that I had 3/4 a tank of gas when I picked it up, and I believe I dropped it off with 1/2 a tank, and the first thought that came to mind is that they must have not put premium in it. |

Usually, when I get fuel, it's near the end of a relatively long ride and I'm ready for a quick break to stretch my legs.

I could write forever about octane but basically the higher the octane the more resistance the fuel is to combustion. ie the higher the compression ratio of the engine the higher the the octane rating is needed to achieve consistent combustion at proper timing. Lack of proper octane fuel in a high combustion engine (like our cars) creates "preignition" pinging, pinking, knocking, lack of acceleration are just a few symptoms. If you had 1/2 a tank of 91 octane fuel 6.5 gal roughly and you add 3.25 gal of 87 octane fuel you would end up with basically 89.6 API octane rated fuel. The Manual for the fa20 engine recommends API 93 octane fuel. It also says "91 may be used with no detriment to engine durability or drivability." It then states that pinking(knocking) occurs with 91api. Which I find disturbing as we can't get 93 in Oregon. In short running octane below 91api will cause knocking and could void your engine warranty. That's about as basic as I can figure out how to put it. I hope this makes since to more than just myself. RON-research octane number API-American Petroleum Institute Btw we have "fuel" now not "gas" but that's a totally different conversation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Ughhh! I just had a stupid f'n pumper unscrew the gas cap and just drop it on the paint. I got out the car and told her to GTFO of the way and let me pump it. Grrrr.. Oregon.
Almost ready to start making excuses to go up to Vancouver and pump there. Stupid f'n draconian laws.. |

An excellent excuse to hop in the car and go for a drive. On the way home, stop in WA and enjoy pumping your own.

A year late and just stumbled on this thread.
I love my Oregon gas jockeys. When it's raining buckets, 33°, wind 35 gusting 50 in Troutdale, puddles all around the car with a visible oil sheen, I'm grateful for our stupid law, one of only two states in the US with mandatory full serve. Coupled with our gas being cheaper than WA due to their state tax scheme, I'm thrilled to have the closest thing to full service available while I stay warm and dry during the stop. I actually take my guys a box of donuts monthly. They don't know that they're from the leftovers bin at Albertson's b/c I tear off the orange tag, but they don't care anyway and for some weird reason most have lost a majority of their teeth so no worries about their remaining enamel rotting. Chevron must not have a dental plan. However, like @indesign, I always call out the octane # and cross-check while they're pumping. |

This law/rule/whatever you call it is stupid. You should have a choice to pump your own gas or not. Even worse when they have no care for your car. I watch them every single time. I don't trust any of them. And I'm from hawaii. We pump our own. It's not that hard.

I don't mind pumping my own anytime in Hawaii, completely different compared to January in Oregon.

I've seen guys on many occasions get out the car and start pumping themselves after the attendant starts the pump. Even with the attendant telling them they can't do that and in some instances threatening to call the cops. Dudes just keep pumping away.
Who is responsible if they damage your ride? How can a law dictate that a stranger can touch your car? Weird stuff man. |
