Edit: To be extremely clear this sentiment is not directed at the magically efficient and great SkyActiv 2.0L.

Not joining in on this fight but....

It's amazing that the FR-S power to weight ratio is 0.0725163162~0.073 for good measure, 7 hp for every 100 lbs

If the miata does end up weighing 2200 lbs it would only need 155 hp to be relatively equivalent to the FRS at 0.0704545455 i around 7 hp per every 100 lbs.

So anything essentially greater than 155 hp to that 2200 lb prediction will surpass the FR-S

it's not bad, I think it's awesome because basically any of the engines they produce now with the exception of the mazda 2 motor and maybe one other would be able to create a good balance.

Not to split hairs, but it'd basically need 160 to match and above 160 to surpass. That's the beauty of an estimated 2200 lb. curb weight (not to mention handling and fuel economy benefits).

Edit: Also more noticeable to typical drivers, with a 2.0L DI engine, it should beat the torque-to-weight ratio of the Twins, so the low-midrange will feel peppier.

That's an excellent point. Peak numbers are one dimensional. It's the seat of the pants feeling that will please or dissapoint not a number on a spec sheet. If the engine has a lot of real estate under the torque curve folks will be happy.

Yeah for those who wanted a bit more torque from the Twins, this could be the answer.

Unfortunately for those looking for a coupe, Mazda doesn't seem to think a Miata coupe would sell in the US (or think the Twins have already occupied that space in the market).

European reviews are starting to come out....

http://www.quattroruote.it/news/prim...ne_video_.html

First translations:

- 1.5 is the preferred engine according to Mazda
- 7500 rpm redline
- this is a prototype, production cars available in August
- electrical steering is a bit 'light' around the center
- car weighs 997kg only 30kg more than the first NA
- 1.5 has 131hp
- price (for the 1.5) will be similar to NC

997kg is just under 2,200 lbs, but I believe someone translated that as dry weight, not curb weight.

Reminder, this is for the European ND and not the American 2.0L version

English reviews....

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...mx-5-15-review

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mazda/m...40/convertible

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/new-...d-know/1310732

The 2.0 is being estimated to have 165bhp. Has it been stated if the US will have the 1.5L as an option?

Is it possible that the 2.0L will come with a power hardtop standard?

50mpg????

It looks like the specs for the 2.0L won't be released today.
I'm liking what I'm seeing from these reviews. A lot of positive comments about the steering feel and light weight. Also looks like Mazda will get close to its 2200 lbs estimated curb weight, at least with the base 1.5 L engine.

The only part that raises an eyebrow for me are the comments in both articles about the body roll. That was one of the few things about the handling I didn't like from the previous generations, especially when you started pushing those cars hard.

Looks impressive overall though, thanks for posting those reviews.
