It will probably go the other way and all the Miata dudes will be screaming that "they messed with a perfectly good car","it's too light and powerful" or "what was wrong with it before?"

Nah, the power to weight ratio is fine. It is lacking in the 86 Tho... Honda put 240hp in their s2000 in 1999... The FRS is moving backwards lolol

a page on the Chicago Auto Show’s official website says the 2016 MX-5 will produce 155 horsepower from its 2.0-litre SkyActiv four-cylinder engine. However, according to Autoblog, Mazda “isn’t sure where they got that number.”

I bet they got that number from Mazda, it's the power rating for the current SkyActiv 2.0 in the 3.

I would be surprised if they aren't able to get at least current NC Miata level of 167hp out of an updated or Miata-specific SkyActiv 2.0.

They really should drop a retuned-for-high-end-power 2.5 in there though as an option. It would be fantastic to have a reasonably-priced minimalist 240hp 2400-lb sports car on the market...

I could be wrong but heres some internet copy and paste specs, if the new car does actually come with 155bhp

86 - 167bhp/ton
New MX5 - 153bhp/ton
S2000 - 192bhp/ton

So the MX5 actually has a lower power to weight ratio than the 86.

Well as for the s2000, one of the reasons that they went out of production was due to the fact that they could not comply with emmissions, so I highly doubt that we will see a production NA 4 pot 2.0 with those figures again, and they achieved those power levels with VTEC YO! Another NA 2 litre with only a single cam profile to achieve those power levels will be undrivable in day to day conditions...think racecar.

An interesting fact, I swapped in a 2zzGE into my MR2, and dyno figures vary, but 200whp is nothing to be sneezed at in a car weighing roughly the same as the MX5, and remember thats Wheel power not Flywheel as stated in the comparison above, so best of both worlds for me, quick in a straight line, and super precise through the corners.... Iv said it before, its better than my 86 in everyway, besides refinement

Didn't Mazda already state that the American version will have at least as much power as the NC? I'm not sure where I heard that.

We should know by Friday right?

I do miss my S2K, FRS, Silvia, 93' RX-7.

Times change, but I refuse to go hybrid. I'll buy a Dodge Challenger before that, and it will be my first muscle car. =P

cost per dollar, and bargain for the buck, I'm a simple plebeian, and have been riding a bike for the past half year in china before I appreciated driving my mom's civic around lol. <3

There's no way they can sell the public a Miata that's down on power from the previous one. The torque curves may be better and Miata.net would be content with a lawn mower engine, it just wouldn't go to well in the presses. Mazda should put in 180hp just to keep those people quiet.

but at least one manufacturer has gotten the equation right.

Instead of cars getting heavier, bigger, fatter, and just adding HP to a fat slug.

the chassis is new and redesigned, it lost weight, center of gravity dropped, and is shorter all together. It would be a blast to drive in dense city metropolises.

I'm clapping my hands, where everyone else is getting bigger and fatter, yes........ balance... I just want to drive it and feel it.

this is mass produced for everyone! even your grandma! =P

Take it out of the box and enjoy. no need to cut and rape.

I just saw a real Civic Type R yesterday, it was my neighbors car. (on total accident) he was just showing me his 3-D milling station...and I saw it in the corner of my eye, damn I wish I had pics... but I don't. maybe I'll get them next week, but it's besides the point. I'll stop my wall-o-text here.

This car will be a hit with all the high school girls and beauty school graduates, if they are in fact only 155 hp. (and Corky Romano)

I remember reading that Mazda would probably have a 155 hp base version for ROW, and a higher hp model available for the US.

The main gating issue for me though isn't lack of power. It's the lack of a Miata coupe for track days.

For a company that likes to brag the Miata is the most popular track car in the world, this seems a bit ironic.
