A few years ago I was working sales at a mazda dealership and we had to move some car that were stuck after a snowstorm.
We had the F&I women helping us and after she had seen us slowly move a few cars from the used lot with a strap and pick up truck.
She wanted to try it and asked how she should go about it, so I told her she simply had to back up but she did it almost like in that video :O
We were lucky that the strap had a small/medium tear so it broke and no damage was done to either car

That was not just a tow strap, it was a tug strap, meant to be used a it was, EXCEPT- a tug strap is meant to be snapped when the stuck vehicle is buried in mud with unbreakable suction. The snap pops the stuck vehicle out.

In the video the truck was just high centered - gentle slow tug would have been fine.

Using a city car truck to pull should have been fine - must be murrican made -

I'm pretty sure that no strap, meant for getting something unstuck using a vehicle, is meant to be used by going backwards with your foot on the floor.

Unless you're trying to perform the fastest engine pull in history...

Looks like the braided nylon straps (like a giant seat belt) we use at the track to recover cars. They're rated for well over a few thousand pounds. If that kind of strap snaps, god help the person or thing that gets in it's way.

I'm pretty sure the guy in the video was thinking of what I know as a recovery strap which is stretchy. You still aren't supposed to floor it but giving a little tug gives a soft jerk to loosen the stuck vehicle.

Winch cables are worse - cuts the body in two like a laser.
In over 30 years off roadin , never saw a tug strap break (they will if frayed).

We broke winch cables though - lots of em !
A heavy coat on the line and ALWAYS stood behind trees.
Only once did I see a Land Cruiser, 8000 lb. Warn winch, no snatch block, get cut in two centrally when the cable snapped. The driver was out winching, if he would have been in the drivers seat it would have cut his arm off at the shoulder.

Worst part was that it was an easy winch, and it didn't look like a cable damper was needed - wrong !, new roof, new windshield frame, .glass, hood etc.. Around 5 grand damage.

Winch cables are a whole different animal. Might as well be a razor slinging through the air. As you said all the tug straps I've seen have either been frayed or rub against something while being used and it's just enough to pop apart.

I can easily believe the amount of damage. People don't realize how much potential energy something under that much tension has. Whether it's a bow string coming apart or a winch cable, it's a lot more deadly than it looks.
