Yes, the stock tires do not have much grip - especially in wet and cold conditions. You want to be careful about over-correcting when counter steering or you will fish tail and lose control without TC/SC intervention. A technique I use is very quickly just give it a bit of counter steer and return to the center, and if it needs more, repeat until you are back in line. This way, you can have a nice controlled drift. But you also have to be careful with your throttle during this too. You actually want to stay on the the throttle a little as it puts more weight on the rear and balances it and allows the rear diff to work.

But as you found out, even if you are not too good at all of that, the modern electronics will still save you most of the time.
