The reputation came from people who bought this car as a DD specially with an automatic and never reved the car past 5k these cars need to be reved if not they build up carbon. There is an RX8 at my local track its an instructors car its got around 5000k track miles and no problems what so ever.

True, those did seem to have a higher rate of reported problems. But even so, there are lots of enthusiasts (who I'd assume rev their cars pretty high) on http://www.rx8club.com with manual transmissions who also had problems. Heat (like in Las Vegas) seemed to hurt early engines too.

And yet there are also ordinary drivers who have 100,000+ miles on the original (and early build) engine too. There just doesn't seem to be any single, consistent pattern to it.

AFAIK, Mazda stopped selling them because they couldn't meet european emmisions standards, and because people stopped buying them when the economy crashed and gas prices skyrocketed and everyone started selling their SUV's and sports cars for 40 mpg cars.

Given your RX8 is an 05 and auto, I'd say trade for a manual BRZ. If you had a series 2 RX-8 manual then I'd say no.

Like I said, it's a 2005 RX8, it's got 81,000km (Yep, Canadian), it's automatic & I owe less than $9,000 currently. By the time the FR-S is released I hope to owe under $7,000 which will give me some room on the trade-in value as I see cars in like-shape, higher mileage going anywhere from $8,000-$11,000.

I love the Mazda but the way I see it, there's just too many up-sides to trading in this car for a FR-S or BRZ (MANUAL no f***in' automatic this time!) at this point in my financing & the RX8's life, that I can't resist it!

Anyway, I was wondering if any you guys could weigh in.
