In the future preferences change and they can go either route. Claiming that all new cars are going this direction is like making a forecast that the company or car will do 100% better since you stated "ALL". FYI anything is possible this might or could go to welding, bonding or just both.
If you think auto makers or any company is not shaving cost off when in the end its amounts to Cost of Sales and Net Profit. Than please do explain reasons for recalls (Q & A), or discountinued makes. Please go back to the grass where you came from and hide under that rock which makes you think the automakers are your parents who look out for you.

In the end, its about cash flow and net profit.
I'm an accounting manager for a billion dollar yearly revenue distribution company in the West-Coast. In the end, it's NOT all about the CF and income statements. For a typical company at the Toyota/Subaru/Fuji level, there are scores of other metrics utilized that do not directly pertain to operations. Leverage, equity, and even non-financial metrics such as market position and turnover come into play to significant effect and stay with the Company throughout its entirety as a going concern (read: in the end, it isn't simply about what you just said.)

I never said auto companies are looking out for our best interests. Quite opposite, they're looking out for THEIR best interests. And in this day in age, it is in THEIR best interest to develop a car that is in OUR best interests. There's plenty of other options. Don't you think for a minute they're trying to cut costs and endanger people purely because they're greedy. It is in the best interests of a firm to perform and offer AS ADVERTISED and ASSURED products. With many other options, firms simply cannot keep putting out bad shit into the marketplace. Refer: bailout of Detroit motor companies.

Furthermore, what are you talking about with, "please go back to the grass where you came from.."? From your entire response I now know the depth and scope of your knowledge & understanding about these things. The very fact that you're trying to paint a company as evil or greedy simply because they're trying to achieve the best benefit/cost ratio for their product or service tells a lot about your fiscal aptitude. Newsflash: engineering a product requires companies to cut, as well as paste. It's a balancing act, not a simple one-way street where they're slashing quality left and right for the sake of some monetary variable cost savings. It's near pointless to continue on... but I'll let you try and explain one last time:

What is your underlying point about how car manufacturers are making our vehicles nowadays and the damage to this rocker panel from his friend smashing it against the blacktop?

Overall companies best interest: Postive CF, IS, BS and Notes to financial statement.

Can you tell us how exactly the dent was created so we can avoid getting something similar? Someone also mentioned dented rocker club like it's a common issue.

Mine was caused by running over a sidewalk hidden under lots of snow. Unfortunate really. But common? Nope. It doesn't happen on its own...

I believe its somewhat common considering I have seen a couple of threads pop up and myself experiencing similar damage.
I also hit a high curb its my first "lowered" car so it took some time getting used to it.
