looking for a cage and I found this



cusco / safety21 makes a weld-in chromoly FIA-approved rally / GT cage... the price is surprisingly not that bad relative to having local shops cage the car, and the design is definitely above and beyond what most of them could do

Forgive my ignorance, but if you are getting new motot, new chasis/case, new everything, so what will you use from original car? Registration number?

Transmissions are going for 750-850 on the forums, so you're close with your thoughts. Engine is worth scrap, so $75.

Not trying to be a ****, but I doubt anyone would want to use that engine since the fire was located at/on the motor.

He's reusing the chassis, just looking at a roll cage for it. The pictures shown are what it would look like installed and painted.

@GT86_PRAGUE the picture is confusing because everything is painted white, the cusco product is just the roll cage tubing and gussets inside. I'm using the chassis that was in the fire, the rear diff + subframe + suspension, and I suppose that's about it.

You got it though, the registration number is still valid, so after I go through an inspection process, because it's listed as repairable salvage currently, I can actually register it and put it back on the road eventually.

@Travisty75 I guess I'll probably wind up tearing the motor down to the shortblock and cleaning that up, and parting the shortblock / head castings / transmission, but that's a lot more work than I had wanted to bother with on a motor I'm not even using. oh well.

It is a lot of work and effort, you must have a lot of time and skills.

so, motoiq is occasionally useful:

"Since the stock electric power steering does not have enough oomph and fades in hard use, a Camry steering rack was used because it had the same mounting bolt span as the stock FR-S rack. To reduce bump steer and to increase rack travel, outer tie rod spacers were made to allow more rack movement and provide a solid steering stop to prevent rack overtravel. The spacers put the outer tie rod joints in line with the lower control arm pivot. Solid rack bushings were machined to get rid of excess slop."

They don't explicitly say what camry that steering rack is from, but I'm pretty sure it has to be rack #26-2630. Looking that number up in cardone's catalog lead to me finding that there's another rack that uses the same mounting centers, #26-2632, from the Toyota Avalon. The Avalon rack looks to be about the same ratio, with a slightly longer throw, or at least a little wider. Ordered a reman rack from Detroit Axle on ebay for $120 shipped.

my SSR gartmaiers showed up from japan finally.





I think I'm going to build just one single rear wheel first to make sure the lips and barrels I want to use actually fit, I'm going to do 18x10.5 -32 in the rear to hopefully get me pretty close to good fitment without having to run a huge spacer.
