which is a better route for the front set up
I'm having a hard time choosing between running 6 1/2 + 1 components and upgrading the 3.5-4", or getting 3.5-4" + 1 components and seperately upgrading the 6.5's

Kind of depends on what you want. I personally upgraded the 3.5's to MTX Thunder35 in the dash (replacing the components with coax) and put a 10" solo baric in the trunk... The 6.5's are pretty worthless and really only cause rattling in the door, but I'm sure if you insulated them a bit better and found something that worked to replace them with it might be OK.
The MTX's give nice trebble and the sub is all the bass I could ever need. |

I agree, it really depends on what you're going for and how much you're willing to spend. I'm upgrading everything, putting a 4" in the dash, a 6.5" in the door and tweets in custom A-pillars. I'm running them active, so that's another consideration: how you're powering them. If you provide a little more info we can help even more.

If you don't know how to properly tune a 3-way front stage I would HIGHLY suggest you stick to a 2-way front stage. You don't just simply throw random speakers in there and hope for the best.

I wouldn't say I'm going to facepalm, but in this scenario you have three tweeters. Those tweeters are going to make the effective cone area of each speaker smaller as well as diffract the sound. Even a simpler 2-way component set like some of the entry level sets from almost any reputable manufacturer on Crutchfield would likely work better. Hell, I'd sell you my Illusion Audio components if I thought you were interested.
If you can return the Infinitys and get a true component set, I would highly recommend that you go that route. You can always upgrade to a 3-way set later wehn youre ready to truly expand your system. |

Pretty much impossible to return the speakers. :'( does not a crossover help with the situation about multiple tweeters though? For instance the door has them but no highs are audible from the doors at all.
I'm not arguing that a proper set would be better, I am just curious about the multiple tweeter aspect and how a cross over influences it.

It will keep you from actually playing 6 tweeters but the other issue is that you have these extra tweeters sitting in front of the mid and midbass. That will cause the sound to reflect off of the tweeters, back to the cone, and combine with the new sound. Is it a MAJOR problem? Not particularly. Just one that can be avoided. Like the smaller cone area. Will the extra cone area that the tweeter poles take up really cost you much in output? Nope. It's just not ideal.
