Assuming doctors study for the money is asinine. Many people can attest to this: if you want boatloads of money, you don't become a doctor.

As a support person in the medical field, I think that answer really depends on how you define "boatload". I'm not saying they don't earn (and to some extend deserve) what they make but to most people it would be a boatload. There's a lot of rowing that goes along with it but its definitely a boatload.

And when you "make it", it barely compares to somebody who's done a simple 4 year undergraduate degree. This is what happens when I compare my current salary (along with my potential salary when I graduate) with the salaries of my friends working in other fields.

I buy used most of the time, unless the new car I want is 1) something special to me and 2) I have the cash to pay for it. That way, I'm never caught "upside down" and I feel the full pain of throwing that money on the curb as I drive off the dealership. In general though, since I keep cars until they have almost zero value (I rarely get rid of a car before it has 200K+ miles), I'm going to take the nearly full hit on the whatever I pay for it anyway. Cars are a consumable, just like that milkshake at Dairy Queen. As far as all those that have a "fear" of buying used, I approach it this way. When I purchased the FR-S, I also, within a couple of months, purchased a 2004 Suburban Z71. The Suburban, when new, was $49,998.32 (I have the window sticker) in 2004. I paid about $12,000 for it and it had right at 100,000 miles on it. It is mechanically sound, and looks brand new on the inside and out. I had some minor service done to it to correct some potential issues with the 4x4 system, so all told I have right at $13,000 in it. For the $36,000 I saved over a new one, I could basically replace the entire drive train and still be way ahead.

I plan on keeping this car for a while.
My dad has owned 70 different cars in his lifetime. Spoiler Alert: He's not even 70 years old.

Because the surest way to keep your brightest minds, is to place caps on their salary/earnings, regardless of how hard they work. Way off topic. Back on topic, I think for a "regular" car (i.e. something that wouldn't be thrashed or modded), buying used should be fine (assuming at least regular maintenance has been kept up) For a sports car, I kinda feel like used becomes more risky - that being said, it might be the only option for certain cars (i.e. if I wanna get a MR2 Spyder when my lease is out). |

I'd buy new again. It's nice not having to worry about what the previous owner did (or in some cases, didn't do) to the car.

I'm a pretty negligent car owner, might as well buy used. Short of not changing the fluids and drying the car off with sandpaper there's not much a previous owner would do that I haven't on a relatively new car.

This is my first ever brand new car and it has more dents and scratches then my damn 23 year old 3000GT VR4 lol. But this is going to be my last brand new car. I just don't find myself being interested in anything else. The closest thing I could care about is the FT1 but lets be real, NO WAY am I, a 24 year old college student, going to be able to afford a brand new FT1 when it comes out. Plus I'm leaning more towards a MKIV anyway.
I gotta agree with all the depreciation comments too. I still owe $22k on a car that's worth $17k right now. If I could go back in time I'd get a supra instead. At least that way I know the car won't depreciate and I could sell the car for basically the same amount that I would buy it for minus mods (even though that would never happen). So will I buy a new car? Nope. If I get a wife and she wants a new car, she can pay for it herself or we can wait 3-5 years lol.
