Now being Canadian where we have a much smaller military and being kicked out is very rare the term Ex simply means you served but don't anymore.
I had three different people from the U.S. point out (one nicely the other two not so much) that the term "Ex" Military was actually only appropriate for those with an "other than honourable" discharge, so in other words given the boot! It was pointed out that I should have said "former" instead.
Now, none of this was a big deal (other then to the two that sent me really pissy PMs) but was a good example of how we can totally misunderstand somebody's perception based on cultural differences.

@Allch Chcar school may have been cheap for you as a resident, but out of state, and out of country students it is about 2-3x more expensive for tuition alone. That, and that they need $$$ for visa's, travel, living expenses, and the average income of a chinese person is 4-5x less(more income gap than America), also no access to student loans etc, makes college in America only for the elite class from China.

Oh I don't know that hat looks just fine to me!
Oh and it isn't a "cowboy hat" it is a police hat and not too sure that your State Troopers pull it off any better.

That hat looks fine to me, too.
Although I generally prefer Australian and Italian hats.

-That's an Outback Trailblazer, by the way.

Wait, aren't Canada, Australia, and New Zealand the same country? They share the same three identifying features:
1. Not 'Murica.
2. Not where the Queen of England lives.
3. People speak English weird there.

I have to point out that the last two features are shared by the US, so we're left with

Which is true for most countries...

First of all, about your other comment, "top 90%" means nothing. I'm pretty sure you have to be relatively wealthy to pay 50k for your kids tuition in the US too.

In China the top 25% is earning at least a third, usually half or more of what their job would pay in the US so there's actually quite a bit of people who can scrounge up enough cash to send their kids to an expensive school overseas because living costs are lower and people love saving money. The bottom 75% makes like 6x less than a comparable worker in the US which is what pulls the average down. Since it's so hard to land a spot in a top ranked university in China, a lot of people are willing to go overseas and effectively pay their way into a better school. It's the same reasoning behind someone going to a private college instead of a state school, except the gap in costs is 2x as big. Some parents will do it, others won't.

The phenomenon of rich Chinese and Korean FOB students driving ultra expensive cars is a different one. China and Korea are very materialistic and status symbol focused societies so a kid whose parents make say, I dunno, 300k USD a year might buy them a nice BMW M6 or something whereas the kind of parent who would buy their teenage kid that kind of car in the US probably rakes in way more money than that. The numbers are probably totally off but the point is that there is a significant segment of the population in China and Korea that has a higher propensity to spend tons of money on things like cars and bags and clothes, whereas in the US people care about being low-key, movie stars excepted.

You're very persistent. Then I have to tell you this, most/if not all of these students didn't have cars while they were here. I had to ferry them back and forth to the dinner and drove several to the airport. That was most of my function for the event was making sure that those who didn't have a safe way to arrive, were offered one. We had maybe 20-30 come to these dinners and of those maybe 6-10 were from China. So it's not as if I am describing a huge group of people here.

I should reiterate that none of them were what I consider to be rude, not in the slightest. In fact, they were very polite and friendly.

No, the difference is both the US and Canada are full of upstanding citizens.

LOLZ
The cultural differences between Canada, Australia and New Zealand are massive!
1. No, thank goodness (sometimes) but very damn close in some areas of southern Ontario
2. We do have queens just not "The" queen (see picture below) but then the U.S. has even more.
3. The common "accent" for Ontario is what is commonly know as Regional Neutral. This is the same accent that the vast majority of movies and TV use. It has been my experience that very few Americans actually talk like they do on film and tv.
