I heard TuRD many many years ago. That's all I ever think of when I see those letters. It makes me chuckle even now.

I'm thinking of upgrading my engine after Christmas to the Innovate system. I just realized I'll own a Super TuRD! Sincerely, Sam

Not sure who picked the TRD name at Toyota, but this is exactly why native speakers in the intended country of sale should review any proposed name BEFORE its widespread use. Does anyone remember the Chevy Nova debacle in the 1970's? In Spanish-speaking countries, sales were abysmal. Finally, someone at GM noticed that "NO VA" in Spanish means, "It doesn't go."

Also, "Toyoda" in Japanese means "fertile field". This is why the name of the company was changed to Toyota in the first place. You would think they had learned their lesson. It's also why any documentation should be reviewed by a native speaker in the intended country of sales. At least we've moved past the era of "Please to take wrench in right hand."

I've seen the huge TRD stickers on the box of Toyota trucks running around for years.
Never been able to think of it in any other way.
