Where I'm at in Texas, I use highways whose exits lead to turnarounds fairly quickly, so I exit the ramp at ~70mph, cruise in 6th to the turnaround, downshift to 3rd or 4th before it, and putz my way through. Never really was one to engine brake going through all the gears.

If I suddenly see I need to pull off a pass, I can down shift to 3rd which would be 4900 RPM just past the torque dip. If you stomp it there you will soon find yourself upshifting again soon. |

Okay. I guess it just seemed like a bigger RPM jump than it is.

It's just so the 3rd gear syncro doesn't have to do all the work of spooling up the input and counter shafts. That technique is definitely not controversial. |

Rev matching is what you are SUPPOSED to do. Any modern automatic gearbox car rev-matches for you, and there are even manual vehicles (such as the 370Z) that will rev-match for you. Rev-matching is the proper technique. |

The new Corvette has active rev matching. If you downshift, it will match the revs for you so that you don't have to blip the throttle. Which made me wonder, if you're accustomed to blipping the throttle and blip it anyway, does it rev match your rev match? |

I double-clutch between rev-matches.
